Venus-Fly-Trap Snares Large Bust-Lines

Custom-made sports bra supports larger cup sizes.

The Venus Fly Trap" sports bra has been a collaborative project over the last three years involving over 150 well-endowed women and bra designer Shelancia Daniel.

During research, each woman complained that sports bras were not available in larger sizes. The women that were able to find sports bras in their sizes found them uncomfortable due to the lack of separation between the busts and the bras had a tendency to minimize their bust lines by crushing the busts tightly against the ribcage. Some women also made a clean breast to wearing another bra under their sports bra to receive adequate support.

Unlike smaller busts, large busts are very heavy and need to be held upwards to take the weight off the back and neck," says Daniel. A sports bra that only minimizes the bustline by holding it tightly against the ribcage can be comfortable for smaller cup sizes, but offers no support for large cup sizes, they need to be lifted and held against the body by a supportive bra"

Drafting bra patterns in larger sizes was not a problem for Daniel, however building a bra that would enable larger busted women to be active and comfortable was a difficult task.

A variety of different types of bra patterns were used for the initial construction of what is now known as the Venus Fly Trap". Some patterns were great for lifting the busts, and other patterns were best for holding the busts, which is why some women wore another bra under the sports bra for support," says Daniel. After the first two years, we decided to combine two different bras into one design to give the wearer the benefit of both bras."

The unique inner cup of the Venus Fly Trap" is similar to a push up bra. It lifts the busts off the ribcage and holds them upwards. The outer cup of the bra is similar to a minimizer bra. It holds the busts in place and also creates a downward push from the upper bustline. The combination of the push up cups" and the minimizer cups combined into one bra creates an almost still hold on the busts that enables its wearer to run, jog or even walk without the pain or embarrassment of bouncing around. The straps on the bra do not stretch and are made specifically to the armhole measurement of the wearer.
