Early Impact, an ecommerce software development company, announced today the release of a new feature for its ProductCart line of shopping cart software, which allows store owners to quickly and easily generate a store map to be submitted to Google's new Sitemaps service.
According to Google, the new service is intended to "enable our crawlers to find out what pages are present and which have recently changed, and to crawl your site accordingly (Google.com - June 2005)." Ecommerce Websites powered by ProductCart now have a way to effectively inform the popular search engine of which pages are available on their stores, and how often they are updated.
Store managers can generate a properly formatted XML file right from within the ProductCart Control Panel. They can choose to include the entire product catalog or exclude one or more categories. They can also indicate how often the product catalog is updated. The shopping cart then generates an XML file containing links to products and categories, and saves it to the Web server.
The store administrator can notify Google of the availability of a new Sitemap in two ways: (1) directly from the ProductCart Control Panel, with one click, or (2) by creating an account on the Google Web site and manually adding the Google Sitemap file location. The second method allows them to be notified when the Sitemap file has been successfully downloaded by Google.
"The Sitemaps feature immediately seemed like a great idea to us," says Massimo Arrigoni, Early Impact's CEO. "It makes a lot of sense that a search engine would use a map of an ecommerce Website to more quickly and efficiently spider and index its catalog. So we jumped on it and integrated it with our ecommerce software as soon as we could."
The 'Generate Google Sitemaps' feature can be added to any store running ProductCart v2.5 and above. The files can be downloaded for free using the 'Check for Updates' system built into ProductCart. The new feature will also be part of the next available ProductCart update.
