London (PRWEB) July 6, 2005
Global Name Registry, the Registry operator for the .NAME top level domain, announces the release of ÂWHOIS IIÂ in a move that establishes an important benchmark in the continuing struggle to protect personal information online.
The .NAME ÂWHOIS IIÂ service will offer significantly enhanced privacy for registrants by removing all personal details from the open WHOIS service. GNR is the first gTLD Registry to offer a WHOIS service of this nature, taking a leading role in the protection of personal information online. GNR expects to have completely phased in WHOIS II by the end of the year.
Geir Rasmussen, CEO of Global Name Registry (GNR), comments, "I am very pleased that we now will be able to offer Registrants on .NAME the increased privacy they, as individuals, deserve. We are committed to making .NAME into the global internet space for individuals and ÂWHOIS IIÂ is an integral part of that task."
Philip Colebrook, Chief Policy Officer for GNR, comments "We are now taking the concept of information protection for individuals a step further. Operating a namespace intended for individuals means that privacy is fundamental to the Registry's operations. The information that is openly available in WHOIS will be cleaned of all personal details. Tiered access to WHOIS information will provide legitimate parties with the level of access that they require."
Hakon Haugnes, President of GNR, explains "The global WHOIS infrastructure is currently an open source of email addresses being used by spammers. WHOIS II effectively puts all WHOIS information out of reach of spammers and will make .NAME more spam resistant than any other gTLD. In effect, WHOIS II complements the existing services offered by the Registrars offering .NAME, such as private registrations, identity protection services and spam filtersÂ.
