Manchester United football players, their families and the coaching staff have been enjoying a pre season break in Vale Do Lobo. But where is Vale Do Lobo? Whats there to keep these multi millionaires occupied and how much would it cost you to stay there?
The sporting resort of Vale Do Lobo can be found about 20 minutes from Faro Airport on the Algarve in southern Portugal.
Its already a firm favourite with many sporting greats, former England player Trevor Brooking owns a villa in Vale Do Lobo, Alan Shearer has a Villa close by and the Ajax football team recently stayed at the Ria Park Hotel in Vale Do Lobo .
I also read with interest that Ronald Koeman the head coach of Portuguese Football team, Benfica, had been in Vale Do Lobo to spy on the Manchester United players. The author of the article obviously didnt realize that Ronal Koeman and his family have been holidaying in Vale Do Lobo since 1988!
There is plenty to keep you occupied. If your sport minded there are two championship Golf Courses in Vale Do Lobo. The Royal Golf Course in particular has one of the most photographed golf holes in the world (the 16th).
There is also an excellent Tennis Academy that is a regular feature of the ATP Seniors Tour and offers some excellent coaching and leisure facilities including a fully equipped Gym. In all there are 10 all weather courts and 4 synthetic courts at the Vale Do Lobo Tennis Academy.
Vale Do Lobo is right on the Atlantic Ocean and the beaches are stunning. Long sandy beaches backed by wide sand dunes and a few excellent beach front restaurants are the perfect remedy for any aching limbs or minds.
There are around a dozen Restaurants in Vale Do Lobo and the resort even has its own shopping mall!
Staying in Vale Do Lobo is not cheap but it is not as expensive as you would imagine either. There are four Hotels in Vale Do Lobo, the 5 Star Le Meriden Hotel is right in the heart of the resort, the 5 Star Ria Park Spa Hotel and the 4 Star Ria Park Garden Hotel are on the edge of the resort and the four-star Formosa Park Hotel is just a 30 second drive away.
There are also a large number of Holiday Villas in Vale Do Lobo that can be rented throughout the year. A typical private villa that sleeps six people and has its own pool will cost you from 800 per week off peak to around 2250 during the peak summer season.
For couples or smaller families there is also quite a good selection of holiday apartments in Vale Do Lobo with prices starting at around 600 pounds per week.
If you do happen to own a football team then there are a couple of full size football pitches that should keep you side in trim and the Estádio Algarve, a 30,000 seat stadium that was used during Euro 2004 is just a twenty minute drive away.
