WPI Releases New Mouse/Rat Eyelid Speculum

WPI has developed a range of small eyelid speculums suitable for mouse and rat eye research. These speculums are stainless steel and very affordable.

(PRWEB) July 17, 2005 -- World Precision Instruments, a company devoted to developing innovative products for life science researchers, has developed an eyelid speculum for use on mice and rats in ophthalmology research. Eye speculums keep the eyelids open during examination or surgery.

In order to develop prescription drugs and surgical techniques for the betterment of humankind, researchers must rely on animal research. Unfortunately, many of the tools they use were originally designed for human use. The obvious difference in size between humans and mice makes for difficulty in using these tools.

For several years, WPI has collaborated with opthalmology researchers at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. This meeting attracts over 9,000 members of the association. Based on discussions, three sizes of speculums were developed for use with mice and rats. The overall length of the speculums is 2.1cm and the blade sizes vary from 2.2mm to 4mm. They are made of stainless steel and can be sterilized by all methods (steam, dry heat, and chemical).

World Precision Instruments has a 40-year history of developing products for the biomedical research market. Our on-site team of researchers continually collaborate with professionals and universities nationwide to design and manufacture products that will assist researchers in their work.
