The Earth Organization Launches Vancouver Chapter

Vancouver is now home to the newest chapter of international environmental group, The Earth Organization.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (PRWEB) July 17, 2005 -- The Earth Organization (EO), an international, non-profit environmental organization founded by veteran South African conservationist and explorer Lawrence Anthony, has just this week launched their newest chapter in Vancouver, Canada with a celebratory opening event.

Renowned for his courageous rescue of the Baghdad Zoo animals in the early days of the Iraqi war, as well as his extraordinary work in rehabilitating traumatized wild African elephant, Anthony set up EO in early 2004 to bring a fresh approach and new solutions to the field of conservation.

The cold, hard facts are that, despite tremendous efforts and resources being brought to bear on environmental problems, the larger planet-wide issues are continuing to get worse," said Anthony. Its been a bit like shuffling the chairs on the Titanic."

There really was no other choice but than to take this on," said Rebecca Davies, the chapters Director. There is just too much at stake for our children and theirs if we dont get this downward spiral turned around."

Citing several chilling statistics, EOs website convincingly makes the point. Per some scientific estimates, as many as 50,000 plant and animal species are going extinct each year. There are now 50 dead zones" in the oceans (massive, polluted areas where no life can exist). Billions of tons of toxins are spewing annually into the air we breathe. Industrial fishing sources estimate that many of the worlds most common fish (tuna, cod, swordfish, and others) have been depleted by 80%.

Davies, a long-time resident of Vancouver, said that identifying the key environmental issue in the local area which, if handled, would demonstrably improve quality of life for Vancouver and the surrounding territory would be the groups first priority. Once that has been isolated, all resources available will be focused on raising public awareness of the situation and working with like-minded individuals and groups to resolve the problem," she said.
