Hollywood, CA (PRWEB) July 25, 2005
Three-time Academy Award® winning writer/director Oliver Stone comes to HollywoodÂs Master Storytellers™ on Tuesday, August 2 with the World Theatrical Premiere of the DirectorÂs Cut of his latest film, "Alexander," it was announced by Gordon Meyer, the creator, Executive Producer and host of the prestigious film series now in its third continuous year at ArcLight Hollywood. Warner Home Video will be releasing both the original theatrical version and StoneÂs new DirectorÂs Cut on DVD the same date.
For Stone, this DirectorÂs Cut was more than simply restoring deleted footage. He dramatically re-shaped and tightened several key portions of the film so that this new version is actually 8 minutes shorter than the original theatrical release. ÂI decided to take another approach to the same story with a different structure that was closer to the original script that I wrote, Stone explains. ÂIt was a fascinating experiment for me to continue editing for another three months after release. "Alexander" is a complex story and man. We took out 17 minutes, and put back 9 minutes, including new and extended scenes. We also restructured the Third Act extensively. The facts of his life remain the same in both versions." Although it may seem unusual to restructure a film as dramatically as Stone has for the DirectorÂs Cut of "Alexander," there are precedents. ÂI remember mentions of playwrights such as Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller rewriting parts of a play after it had been produced," Stone said in a recent interview. ÂWhy shouldnÂt a filmmaker be able to do so in DVD versions?Â
ÂIÂm really looking forward to sitting down with him and discussing not only the challenges of "Alexander," but also the creative journey behind this new version. WeÂve wanted to have Oliver come to HollywoodÂs Master Storytellers™ for a long time, says Meyer. ÂWeÂre especially thrilled that heÂs chosen HollywoodÂs Master Storytellers™ to host the World Theatrical Premiere of the DirectorÂs Cut of his film. He is one of the most honored and provocative filmmakers in Hollywood with three Academy Awards®, eight Oscar® nominations, four Golden Globes® and an Emmy® on his mantle. If that doesnÂt qualify him as one of HollywoodÂs Master Storytellers™, I donÂt know what does.Â
ÂHollywoodÂs Master Storytellers™ is rapidly becoming the showcase of choice for filmmakers and studios to debut DirectorÂs Cuts of their films says Nadine C. Hamdan, who along with Meyer and screenwriter John Culton is one of the Executive Producers of the storytellers series. In addition to "Alexander," HollywoodÂs Master Storytellers™ has also hosted the World Theatrical Premieres of the DirectorÂs Cuts of Antoine FuquaÂs "King Arthur" and Peter BogdanovichÂs "Mask." ÂIn just a few short years, weÂve developed a reputation for quality in programming, presentation thanks in part to our fabulous host venue, ArcLight Hollywood, and the intelligence and appreciation of our audience that makes us increasingly popular with A-List Hollywood as a place to be seen.Â
