Old and Wise ... In the Ways of the Web

Move over generation Y. With time up their sleeves and broadband at their fingertips, baby boomers (and their parents) are proving to be quite the innovators in web site development. Technology is making it easy for the once neglected web generation to power onto the www with quite stunning and innovative web sites that detail diverse aspects of their lives and interests.

Time up their sleeves and broadband at their fingertips. Once they were down playing bowls, now you are just as likely to find them at a keyboard building their own bowl’s website...in 3D.

Creating a website has never been easier as many elder members of the community, often unfairly stereotyped as 'technophobic,' have been proving lately. Sites like a lawn bowls league sites (http://www.gogofrog.com/userdata/hamleybridgebowl/), a couple documenting their family history (http://www.gogofrog.com/userdata/chdowney/) and

a group of retirees sharing memories from high school days (http://www.gogofrog.com/userdata/SFAHigh/) are just a few examples of the early baby boomers (and some of their parents) generation showing the young ones how its done.

What has historically stiffled people from building websites is the extent of technical skill that needs to be learnt. Easy for youth but often all to new for the older pre-PC generations. Purpose built for user simplicity, innovative websites like Gogofrog now allow anyone to create a website without having to learn any 'technical jargon' at all, effectively freeing the web up for all.

The Gogofrog 3D Web Space service was launched in April 2005, and more than 1000 users from around the globe built Web Spaces within the first month alone. The service is free and all a user need do to build his or her own Gogofrog Web Space is input a username & password, provide an e-mail address, then follow a few simple site-construction steps that include choosing from a set of templates to get started quickly.

Gogofrog was never targeted specifically at the elderly so co-owner Vincent Teubler was initially surprised by the response amongst retirees. He says, "It was initially a shock but as is always the case, those with a lot of life experience like to share their knowledge. We have a lot of sites created by grandparents dedicated to letting grandchildren understand their history and the story of their family. This really provides a great way to leave a legacy and preserve a sense of family history and it's a lot easier then writing a biography."
