The debate surrounding what goes on at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay is just the kind of controversy a t-shirt vendor dreams of.

If you saw the latest creation from conservative t-shirt maker you'd certainly think captured terrorists have come a very long way. ShopMetroSpy's new t-shirt depicts a tropical island paradise, complete with palm trees, sun and sand with a turban wearing cartoon character giving a great big thumbs up. The caption reads, “Club G'itmo - Party and Play Where the Terrorists Come to Stay.”

Many in the U.S. are angered by the false notion that Gitmo prisoners are being tortured when in fact they are provided with an endless supply of perks and resort-style amenities. So annoyed by the torture claim, right-wing talk radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh have dubbed Guantanamo Bay “Club Gitmo” to highlight the truth about American servicemen and the treatment of our enemy prisoners.

“I think captured Al'Qaeda have it whole lot better than our guys, that's for sure,” said Nate Thomas, product manager for

According to media reports, hostage-takers, car bombers and assassins being held at Gitmo are offered an assortment of Jihadi books, Halal meals and religious paraphernalia that include caps, prayer rugs and special sinks to make it easy for the prisoners to soak their feet. and the official Department of Defense website also report, detainees are awarded gift baskets loaded with fresh towels, scented soap, shampoo and clean clothes.

After learning the truth about Guantanamo Bay, the folks at set out to design a t-shirt that people would notice and remember.

“We wanted a humorous way to show people what's really going on inside Gitmo,” said Thomas.

So far, the Club Gitmo t-shirt has been one of their best selling items ever – shipping more than 1300 orders in just a few weeks.

Thomas believes the idea that terrorists are being tortured at Guantanamo Bay is crazy. He says, “Compared to the caves and bunkers of the battlefield, Gitmo must be like heaven. And as long as the terrorists stay put, they'll never have to worry about hell raining down in the form of JDAMs, bunker busters and depleted uranium.”

Critics of the Club Gitmo t-shirts say this is a perfect example of why Americans are hated around the world. Finding humor in the poor treatment of prisoners, even if you believe the charges are not true, is just wrong.

Despite the critics, intends to keep selling the Club Gitmo t-shirts throughout the 2006 campaign season.
