Have White House Flip-Flops Been Good for Business?

Once again the news has been rife with comments about flip flops in the political sphere. But this time, the flip flops are of the Northwestern Women's Lacrosse Team, and this small Chicago business has been cashing-in on the publicity.

Flip flops, those worn on your feet, have taken over the news. They have been mentioned as hot fashion trends, prudent attire for airport security lines, and now: improper shoes for meeting the President. And this Chicago small business has been cashing-in on the publicity.

No one has forgotten that 2004 was the year of the flip flop. It was a presidential election year. Each party on the ballot tried to convince American citizens that their opponent was a habitual flip flopper.

2005 still appears to be the year of the flip flop, but now it's the clothing accessory.

YourFlipFlops.com is a mother and son team in Chicago who run an online boutique specializing in women's flip flops.

"My mom cuts out articles for me every time she sees the word 'flip flops.' She called me the day the papers reported on the flip-flop flap at the White House", said Nathan Kontny, YourFlipFlops.com's co-founder.

As Nathan explains, "I definitely saw an increase in traffic and sales at our site last week. We probably got some benefit from people typing in 'flip-flops' into Google looking for the White House news and seeing our ad."

The store was founded from an idea that started on Mother's Day. Nathan had created a pair of flip flops as a gift. Coincidentally when his mother, Rita Kontny, came over to celebrate her day, he saw that she had created her own pair. "Her flip flops put mine to shame", he says.

Rita soon found her friends and colleagues at work buying her hand crocheted sandals.

Nathan said, "I thought we could try to get some business online. Since my mom is retiring from her day job after this year, it's a pretty great partnership and opportunity for us both".

It just might be worth a shot for these two entrepreneurs to try and get the women in the Bush family to become, and admit to being, a YourFlipFlopper.
