Statement of Need:
Bipolar disorder (BPD) is a serious psychiatric illness characterized by a pattern of alternating manic and depressive episodes. BPD has diverse clinical manifestations, with varied symptomatology, disease course, severity, and response to treatment. It is estimated that up to 80% of patients with BPD are misdiagnosed and do not receive appropriate treatment. Bipolar depression is one of the predominant phases of bipolar disorder and often proves refractory to treatment. An increasing number of treatment options for bipolar disorder have become available over the past several years. Atypical antipsychotics are used successfully in treating acute mixed or manic episodes associated with BPD; in addition, data from recent studies show that atypical antipsychotics may also be effective agents for patients with acute bipolar depression. Implementing a pharmacological treatment plan for both acute episodes of bipolar disorder and long-term maintenance therapy requires a thorough knowledge and consideration of:
1. existing clinical guidelines
2. a patient's symptoms and/or comorbidities
3. evidence for the efficacy of old and new agents
4. a patient's prior response to a particular agent,
5. its indications for use
6. the adverse effect profile of a given agent
This interactive, evidence-based psychCME TV activity will highlight the latest clinical data regarding the efficacy and safety of agents used to treat BPD, and provide clinicians with strategies to adapt existing treatment guidelines to accommodate the needs of individual patients.
