Bringing extraordinary style to everyday living: high design is on the program for cable TV. Product Ventures Designs Remote Control & Set-top Box for UK Market. Looking to gain share in Britain's competitive television service market, cable company Telewest Broadband and Scientific-Atlanta collaborated with Product Ventures to enhance the consumer experience through high design.

Looking to gain share in Britain's competitive television service market, cable company Telewest Broadband and Scientific-Atlanta collaborated with Product Ventures to enhance the consumer experience through high design. Taking cues from high end, high technology products, Product Ventures has redesigned the fascia of Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer® 8300DVB™ personal video recorder (PVR), due for launch by Telewest Broadband late this year. Even the corresponding remote control received a makeover, as it will serve as the “handshake with the customer” when they access Telewest Broadband's television service.

“Modern, smooth lines and form gives the brand a higher level of sophistication and a sleeker image,” says Javier Verdura, VP of Design at Product Ventures. “For consumers who are design conscious, this set-top box will fit seamlessly with other sophisticated design elements of their home. And the equally-elegant remote control offers both improved functionality and visual allure.”

Not Your Run of the Mill Cable Box

With ever increasing competition between television service providers, the new Explorer PVR creates a preferable proposition over other offerings through its improved design and increased functionality. Working closely with Scientific Atlanta and Telewest, Product Ventures achieved an aesthetically pleasing European design sensibility through contemporary form and sexy curves, giving the brand a premium image.

The “display worthy” Explorer PVR complements other electronic devices and is a welcome addition to the media console. The cleverly and intuitively positioned function buttons eliminate clutter. A combination of anodized silver and glossy black finishes makes an elegant visual and tactile statement. When in use, the subtle hint of colored light on the front panel is just enough to alert what function is in use without creating a distraction. The light pipes placed above and below the right cluster buttons provide further visual interest via a subtle asymmetry in an otherwise symmetrically planned design. Quality materials and construction further contribute to the fascia's upscale look and feel.

Easy-to-Use, Elegant, Playful, Sexy, Desirable… That's Some Remote

Next, the design team focused on improving the customers' interaction with the remote control. In terms of impact on customer satisfaction, the importance of the remote control cannot be understated. Each time the customer uses the remote to access the television service, it's an opportunity to build the consumer+brand relationship. Form and function play a critical role in ensuring a satisfying, intuitive and hassle-free experience.

Key attributes of the remote control's design were comfort, logic, as well as elegance. The result is a beautiful, easy to use and “all in one” unit. Telewest's hierarchy of consumer needs and Product Ventures' ergonomic research drove the remote's functionality layout, while its overall aesthetic design follows the same contemporary 3D brand language established by the Explorer PVR.

The remote's superior ergonomics create a snug, comfortable fit in the palm of the hand. To ensure the proper weight and balance, the design team precisely calibrated the remote's load and center of gravity. Ergonomically and intuitively superior, the remote is designed so that the user's fingers fall perfectly over the navigational buttons, set in the center of the remote. Much attention was paid to the logical mapping of user buttons, as 99% of customers will use the remote unaided. To measure usability, the designers blindfolded themselves to test the intuitiveness. The symmetrical design means both left- and right-handed users can use the remote easily.

Javier Verdura led the Product Ventures design team, which also included Jon Lee and Peter Michaelian.
