E.J. Kelty, known in New York City and around the world as “The Circus Photographer,” documented the bizarre and unusual characters in the Early American Circus in the 1920s and 30s. Many of the photographs are on display in various museums and private collections including the renowned photographer Diane Arbus.

August 15, 2005 A collaborative documentary project between CITC Productions and Century Flashlight Studios, A Flash of Light – the Photographs of EJ Kelty will premier on Plum TV.

A Flash of Light chronicles the life and work of EJ Kelty from his war years through the depression, up to his unheralded death in Chicago in 1967. While reviewing the film for The White Tops magazine (June 2005), Robert Goldsack writes, “A Flash of Light takes us on an emotional journey of Americana through the lens of one of the greatest circus photographers in America.”

Ellen Warren of the Chicago Tribune in her feature story, “The Mysterious Mr. Kelty,” (http://216.177.178.114/century/html/products/index.cfm) writes, “But what of the man behind the camera? In the early 1940s, the hard-drinking New York photographer and proprietor of Century Photography sold some of his negatives, unloaded the rest to settle a bar tab and moved half-way across the country to Chicago where he seems to have had no prior ties. Most puzzling of all: As far as anyone knows, he never took another picture.”

“Kelty was the Cecil B. DeMille of Circus Photography,” claims Miles Barth a photographic curator and author who recently released his book “Step Right This Way—The Photographs of EJ Kelty”, in conjunction with a photo exhibition of Kelty’s work at New York’s International Center for Photography.

A Flash of Light traces the turbulent personal life of America’s best known circus photographer, E.J. Kelty. "We are thrilled to present the world premiere of ‘A Flash of Light’,” offers Jage Toba, Director of Programs of Plum TV. “We are proud to play a part in bringing awareness and quality films to an ever-growing audience embracing the distinctive films winning acclaim in today's film festivals."
