Colorado Man Makes An Unprecedented Trek to Raise Money for Cancer Victims
Cancer orphan dedicates three years to walk 16,000 miles through all 48 continental US states to raise awareness and funds to help families fight cancer.
(PRWEB) August 12, 2005 -- Imagine it, you go to the mailbox, filled with condolence cards and among them is a bill, a bill for over $1,000,000 and you are only 10 years old. Youve lost both of your parents to cancer and you are an orphan, left with unfathomable medical bills and a burning desire to help families fight cancer ...
... and helping families to fight cancer is exactly what John Buoniconti is doing, one step at a time, 25,000 steps a day. Buoniconti is walking 16,000 miles through the continental United States to raise at least $5 million to assist uninsured and underinsured cancer patients pay for life saving treatments.
Having logged more than 1,550 miles on The Big Walk since the start in Maine this past March, "Big John" plans to reach San Diego, CA in 2008.
"I wanted to do something different," says Buoniconti, "so I decided to walk through all 48 states to help cancer patients in every state. If by walking 15 miles a day, six days a week for three years I can help alleviate the suffering, and make it so people dont have to choose between paying for their treatments and putting food on the table for their family, then thats what Im going to do."
"The stories I get from people along the way are heart wrenching and remind me why Im doing this," says Buoniconti. "My fiancée and I decided to put our lives on hold -- we left our jobs, our home and our families in order to realize The Big Walk -- and every step has been worth it."
Before embarking on The Big Walk, Buoniconti founded Big Johns Team, a non-profit organization based in Fort Collins, CO. The creation of Big Johns Team was only the first phase in his plan to reach-out to cancer victims and their families.
A company out of Chicago, IL Event 360, is the presenting sponsor of The Big Walk. The US Jaycees and Brooks Sports are also supporters of the trek.
