Celebrated Couturier, Toni Whitaker, Creates Drama with Style for Opera Troupe. 1920s New Orleans Chic Costume Design set for Ebony Opera Guilds La Traviata.
Houston TX (PRWEB) August 18, 2005 -- As opera is drama set to music, Houstons celebrated fashion designer, Toni Whitaker, has created drama through fabric with her sumptuous 1920s designs for the Houston Ebony Opera Guilds presentation of La Traviata. The production runs Friday August 26 and Saturday August 27 at Miller Outdoor Theatre beginning at 8:00 pm and will be sung in English, admission is free.
Ms Whitakers lush costuming sets the tone for the non-stop party atmosphere of prohibition-era New Orleans. I wanted to capture the sultry style and sophistication of the 1920s dress but stay true to Verdis vision," Ms Whitaker said. Violetta is a woman with a past, but shes sweet, a tragic heroine, innocent albeit seductive."
First performed in Venice in 1853, Giuseppi Verdis La Traviata ("The Wayward Woman"), tells the story of Violetta a courtesan who falls in love with Alfredo Germont the son of the wealthy Giorgio Germont. The story is a quintessential romantic tragedy that delivers a timeless commentary on conventional bourgeois morality, arguing that a good heart is more important than propriety and that true love must triumph over all.
The Toni Whitaker Boutique, one of the smartest shops in Houstons trendy Rice Village, has served socialites and Texas best dressed women for over 20 years. Ms. Whitaker is widely recognized for the elegant simplicity of her original garments and is the recent recipient of the Houston Chronicles Ultimate Fashion Designer" award.
