Imkaan is a national second tier national charity that aims to provide strategic advocacy and targeted organisational support to refuges serving the needs of Asian women and children experiencing domestic violence.
After reviewing three development agencies, Imkaan recruited on-IDLE to develop the website to support and publicise its research, policy and training work.
on-IDLE has delivered an easy-to-use CMS that supports a fully dynamic site with excellent customer-led design. Managing Director and Co-Founder AnÃ©-Mari Peter says, ÂImkaan needed a site that not only communicates complex issues effectively, but offer support and resources to the organisations and refuges. The site and supporting CMS further needed to meet higher accessibility and usability demands than a more typical private sector company site. We are particularly pleased to be extending our reach in the charity sectorÂ.
The website is a public resource and holds a great deal of detailed information which is cross-referenced to make the site simple to navigate. Imkaan can now update their unique target audiences on sector issues, training schemes and policy developments as well as creating a massively useful online resource for legal, government and refuge professionals.
ÂItÂs the first website and digital presence for Imkaan, so it was critical that we work with an agency that understood our version, target audiences we reach and the messages we need to communicate. We deal with important and sensitive subject matter for a range of external parties, but needed a website that steered clear of the stereotypical charity theme and enthused more of the ImkaanÂs personality whilst being conscious to issues that we immersed withinÂ, added Co-Founder and Creative Director Marc Peter at on-IDLE.
on-IDLE will also be working with Imkaan revising the corporate identity for the charity to seamlessly flow with the new website and digital presence.

The company trades in the UK, Swiss, Saudi Arabian and German markets, with clients being on average of 60% repeat business. What does Âon-IDLEÂ mean?
Âon-IDLEÂ is a code script handler that is activated when something is down / not responding as expected Â when the computer is idle. The ÂonÂ command activates the application / tool / device again. Similar to a car idling, it is ready to go, but only when the handler is activated (gas pedal and gears) does it go. on-IDLE do a lot of trouble-shooting and updates on previously developed work for agencies and companies, making the name more apt than ever in todayÂs fast changing interactive environment. We always tease our customers with this made-up script: Âon-IDLE go pubÂ, i.e. leave the problem with us and go and relax.
Imkaan were set up initially in November 1998 with the Newham Asian Women's Project (NAWP) http://www.nawp.org/, winners of the BBC ASIA Community Award, in conjunction with the Asian Women's Resource Centre (AWRC) in Brent.
The project was established as a centralised co-ordinating body to act as a collective voice for Asian women and children across the country, which was based on the combined history and expertise of these two projects. Imkaan were managed by these two projects and were able to benefit from over three decades of community history, policy and service provision.
As the operational manager NAWP took responsibility for Imkaan's development, financial policy and accountability. This framework of experience and expertise enabled Imkaan to establish a unique profile supported by NAWP and directed by its own internal independent Advisory Group.
Imkaan developed and progressed a much enhanced work programme and structure. They gained experience and expertise as a credible community based advocate in the domestic violence sector and therefore were well placed to become an independent organisation. They applied and successfully achieved this status, on 22nd September 2004, when Imkaan became an independent charity.
