Meeting the Changing Requirements of Student Accommodations

Premier Assistive is now making "student editions" of its software available to students. "Student editions" of software packages are not a new concept. Many companies are already doing this, but we are the first to do this with assistive technology. These "student editions" are the very same products we sell elsewhere, however, the price has been reduced so that they can be affordable to students. Now, for the price of some college textbooks, students can OWN their accommodations.

We hear the same story from schools time after time, "We buy assistive technology and nobody uses it," says Dr. Steven Timmer. Is it because students' needs and their study methods are changing? If that is the case, then maybe the way we approach accommodations for students needs to change. Five years ago, the cost of a desktop personal computer dropped below $1000; Just two years ago, the price of a notebook computer dropped below $1000. The point is most students attending institutions of higher learning now have their own computer. In fact, in a growing number of institutions, it is a requirement to have a personal computer to attend the school. Students are spending less time on campus, and are using their personal computer instead of working in the lab. Through our new online ReadingXpress initiative (http://www.readingxpress.com), Premier Assistive is now making "student editions" of its software available to students.

What about the students who would benefit from Assistive Technology, but don't qualify? Have you ever had to turn away a student and wished you had a place to send them? Budgets require you to limit who has access to assistive technology, but there are many struggling students who could significantly benefit from the technology. The Reading Xpress initiative can benefit ALL students, not just those qualifying for accommodations.

ReadingXpress consists of two "literacy productivity packs" designed specifically for students: one with scanning / OCR capabilities and one without. These products are called Literacy Productivity Pack 1SE and Literacy Productivity Pack 2SE. Now for the price of a couple of pizzas, students can actually OWN their accommodations and use them at their convenience—on their own computers. Most importantly, they can take the technology with them once they graduate. If you need the technologies for school, you will need them for life.

Additionally, Premier Assistive makes the literacy productive packs available to school bookstores so that students can purchase the technology with Pell Grant and student loan monies. Students can purchase these technologies and download them almost immediately. This is also ideal for distance education learners. You may be 500 miles from campus and not have access to an accessible lab. ReadingXPress brings the accommodations to you!!
