According to Cheryl Perlitz, mountain climber, survival expert and author of "Soaring Through Setbacks... You cant go around, you cant go through and you must climb."
Hurricane Katrina is just such a mountain.
Join Cheryl as she shares her unique perspective on how to survive those devastating loses of life, love, home and community that accompany natural disasters.
A Few SURVIVAL TIPS for surviving, reviving and thriving after the storm:
| | - Let yourself experience the emotional roller coaster. Its part of the recovery process. You are not falling apart, you are just grieving for all that you have lost, and it will pass with time.
| | - Take care of yourself and nurture those things you DO have... supportive neighbors, family, a nation of support, and your own health.
| | - Step back and look at your losses objectively, and from a new perspective: see the value in lives saved and not things lost.
| | - Choose your attitude. You cant control what happens to you, but you can control how you react to what happens to you. Choose to look at your situation as an opportunity to 'make a difference.
| | - Find a positive support group. Connect with friends, neighbors, family, old friends you haven't seen in a while. Stay away from 'glass half empty' people.
| | - Concentrate on helping others. We benefit personally by helping those in need. It changes our perspective and helps us to transform our own challenges into the positive.
| | - Practice patience. The recovery process is a daunting task. Dealing with insurance companies, government aid and reconstruction takes a long time. Live moment by moment, day by day and know that each step will get you closer to the end.
