Dr. Daniel Farb offers Writing Clearly as his latest in the Interactive Training Library series from the University of Health Care. As a leader in the field of training and interactive learning, Farb brings his audience a simple, easy-to-use “how to” guide to writing and thinking clearly.

With an emphasis on sales, health care and business, this 60-page manual and CD set provides a good overview for business people who need a refresher course in proper word usage or who need tips in writing and thinking more concisely. While not designed for English or journalism students, the course is particularly useful for beginners or those new to business writing.

Using the simplest possible terms, Dr. Farb does an excellent job explaining the major principles of writing, including sentence structure, topic selection, and paragraph organization. He brings readers useful tips on how to turn passive sentences into active ones, complete with examples that are easy to apply.

Farb also shares tips on words to avoid, the use of short and succinct language, and definitions of words that are often confused with each other (e.g., affect vs. effect, all ready vs. already, etc.) Using simple language, Farb covers sentence variety, outlining, getting an audience’s attention, along with personal writing and parallel construction. The section on writing a well organized paragraph is particularly helpful and should be marked for future reference.

In addition to sentences he developed, Farb uses actual newspaper articles to emphasize a number of his points. These examples are particularly interesting, because it creates a curiosity in the reader to watch for patterns of clear and succinct writing, as well as writing that is confusing or ambiguous.

With carefully selected graphics added for emphasis, the CD is essentially a duplicate of the manual. It is a useful, interactive accompaniment to the written version, particularly for those who prefer to learn on the computer rather than by reading an instruction manual. Like his other CDs, Farb does a good job of engaging the user with interesting graphics and examples and interactive test questions throughout the course. At the end of the CD, he provides a separate exam and certificate of completion for those who successfully complete the course.

Overall, the Writing Clearly course is easy to read and understand, providing helpful advice that can be applied to many writing situations. The program is an excellent tool for those new to the business world or who need a refresher course on writing basics.
