African-American architect turns into sexy best-selling book publisher -- gets books into WAL-MART (1st Independent Af-Am Publisher To Enter Wal-Mart Without Using A Major-Publisher For Distribution)

Felicia Hurst, President of Atlanta-based Black Pearl Books (, is the hottest new literary diva in the publishing industry.

Ms. Hurst has managed to get her company's 17 Hot-Selling books on shelves at Borders, Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, Hudson News,, 100's of Independent African-American Bookstores and most-recently Wal-Mart!

Black Pearl Books has four Essence Magazine Best-Sellers to its credit (“Caught Up,” “Slick,” “Sex A Baller,” and “Wild Thangz”).

Blue-print of success …

With all of Ms. Hurst's success, one would assume that she has a literary background. Is she an author? No. A former book-editor? No. College degree in English or Literature? No, though she does have 3-college degrees in Architecture-related studies (B.S – Architectural Studies – U of Illinois; B.A. – Architecture – U of Minnesota & a Master's in Management Technology – U of Wisconsin-Stout)

Architecture? That's correct. Hurst left an extremely lucrative career as an Architect, which included owning her own firm, to pursue her passion.

“The decision wasn't hard at all. Though I love architecture too, I've always enjoyed reading. Especially, gritty, hot & steamy books,” she admits shamelessly. “Often, I'd find myself rushing to finish architectural drawings quickly, just so that I could get back to a book that had me captivated.”

Getting 'props' from vibe magazine & other urban publications …

“Gritty Urban Realism At Its Best!” is how VIBE Magazine describes “Legit Baller” by Jerry Blackshear.

“This Joint Is So Hot!...Ghetto-Fab!....Game Has to Be Recognized!” says Rolling out Urban Style Weekly Magazine of “Hustlers” by Ronald Quincy.

Hurst and Black Pearl Books authors have also garnered mega-attention from the nation's hottest media including features in Philadelphia Daily News.

Giving 'props' to the queen …

In an industry, where authors and publishers are often, all too willing to cloak themselves with nicknames, it's refreshing to listen to the 30-something publisher give credit to whom she dubs 'The REAL Queen of Urban Fiction' – Teri Woods (Best-Selling Author & Publisher).

“I think anyone that's in the urban fiction publishing game, owes a huge 'Thank You' to Teri Woods,” says Hurst. “This genre would still be ignored had Teri not trail-blazed a path for publishers like myself to follow. Anyone that tells you different is lying!”

Ms. Hurst is a pioneer in her own right, as the 1st Independent African-American Publisher to enter Wal-Mart without needing the assistance of a Major-publisher for distribution.

They sell so fast! (Black Pearl Books Titles)…

Neferetiti Steward, owner of The Truth Bookstore (Detroit) says, “Felicia definitely has her finger on the pulse of this genre of books! They sell so fast for me, it seems like I'm constantly ordering Black Pearl titles!”

“I signed-up to Black Pearl's e-mail list, so that I can be notified when the books are released, because if you don't get to Borders or Waldenbooks early, they'll be sold-out. And I can't stand having to wait by back-ordering them," adds Suzette Brown (Baltimore), veteran book reader/Black Pearl Books fan.

Hurst's latest 2-New Releases, “Legit Baller” by Jerry Blackshear & “Hustlers” by Ronald Quincy are no exception to the extraordinary sales occurring at chain stores.

Designing best-sellers …

With titles like “Legit Baller,” “Hustlers,” “Shakedown,” “Busted,” “Hustlin' Backwards,” “Nasty,” “Street Games,” “Hyped,” “Twisted,” “Wild Thangz,” “Crunk,” “Slick,” “Dyme Hit List,” “Caught Up!” & “Sex a Baller,” it appears that Black Pearl Books has all facets of the urban fiction market covered.

“My main focus is true-to-life urban stories, whether it be gritty street-life or sex-filled drama,” Hurst divulges what she seeks out from the dozen-manuscripts that she receives per week. “In most cases, books that I publish combine these two elements, while adding a touch of mystery.”

A bright future! …

In 2006, Ms. Hurst's Black Pearl Books plans to release 30-New Novels!
