Swisslog Refrigerates Automated Pharmacy Medication Store & Pick Cabinet

Swisslog develops a refrigerated medication storage and retrieval cabinet for hospital pharmacies.

Swisslog, a leader in hospital pharmacy automation systems, has developed an automated refrigerated pharmacy medication storage and retrieval cabinet. The refrigeration capability will be added to Swisslog’s existing BoxPicker system, a high density, automated pharmacy cabinet for storing and dispensing medication inventory and supplies.

The major benefit of the refrigerated BoxPicker is that hospital pharmacies can combine multiple refrigerators into an automated storage and retrieval cabinet. These are items that hospitals traditionally have not been able to store and retrieve in an automated system like BoxPicker or a vertical carousel.

The refrigerated BoxPicker will maintain specified temperatures between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit. A heat exchanger will be mounted remotely to reduce noise and heat emissions. This system will not cause a loss in storage capacity or increase height compared with the existing non-refrigerated BoxPicker.

BoxPicker is an automated system that stores and dispenses items in individual storage bins. The operator fills a bin with medications and BoxPicker automatically stores it on racking inside a secure enclosure. All transactions start and finish through a controlled-access drawer. Information about the contents of a bin is entered at a workstation.

The BoxPicker interfaces to the hospital and or pharmacy IT system for seamless transfer of medication and patient order data.

BoxPicker offers high-density, compact storage of up to nearly 700 bins in less than 75 square-feet of floor space. Picking rate performance over vertical carousels is more than three bins to one, greatly enhancing hourly throughput and production (200 bins per hour). BoxPicker provides secure user access, a totally enclosed structure for safety, and high transaction speeds.
