Statement of Need:
The prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness is reported to be as high as 31% of the adult population and can take a significant personal and professional toll on patients' lives. Impairments from sleep deprivation can negatively impact mood, concentration, vigilance, short- and long-term memory, and executive motor function. Excessive sleepiness may be related to psychiatric illness, medical illness, or medications used by patients. Diminished wakefulness and alertness may also be secondary to sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), circadian rhythm disorders such as shift work sleep disorder, and narcolepsy. In this evidence-based psychCME TALK activity, the experts will explore the link between sleep and cognition and pose treatment strategies to maximize patient outcomes.

Faculty:
Thomas Roth, PhD
Clinical Professor of Psychiatry
University of Michigan School of Medicine
Director of Sleep Disorders and Research Center

- Determine the impact of excessive sleepiness associated with shift work sleep disorder and disease-related disturbances such as obstructive sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome on neurocognitive domains of working memory and executive function.
- Design a treatment plan that utilizes pharmacological and non-pharmacologic strategies to improve patient outcomes.
