Under the partnership, funds will be raised and free emergency 911 cell phones will be provided.

RMS Communications Group Inc., a leading recycler and remarketer of old cell phones, announced today it will partner with the Montgomery County (Md.) Police Department to raise funds and provide free emergency cell phones for local crime victims and senior citizens.

The Montgomery County Police Department has collected old cellular phones for several years. But under the new agreement with RMS, the department will raise funds which will be managed by the Montgomery County Police Foundation. Those funds will support senior education and outreach efforts and will provide emergency 911 cell phones to crime victims and residents in need.

During the month of September, the department will give up the value of each phone it collects, and RMS will donate that amount plus $1 for each phone to the National Sheriff’s Association (NSA) Adopt-A-Cop program. That program is providing funds to law enforcement officers who are working in hurricane-affected areas and who have lost what they own due to hurricane and flood damage.

In addition, the Montgomery County Police Department has agreed to give up the emergency 911 phones that would be received from RMS in September and send them for use by survivors in the three states most affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Residents who have unused cell phones are encouraged to drop them off at any of the six Montgomery County Police district stations. The phones will then be mailed to RMS, which will evaluate each phone’s best use. High value phones will be converted to cash that will be sent to the Montgomery County Police Foundation. For each phone that is converted to cash, one working 911 cell phone will be donated to the Montgomery County Police by RMS.

Useable phones not converted to cash will be added to an inventory of 911 emergency phones. As a participating agency, the Montgomery County Police Department will have access to the inventory pool of 911 cell phones to benefit crime victims or citizens in need.

Unusable or damaged phones will be responsibly recycled by RMS according to strict environmental guidelines
