Chef Splichal's menus will be served on all flights to Germany from 14 of the Airline's 16 U.S. gateways for four months beginning in November 2005.

Lufthansa announced today that celebrity Chef Joachim Splichal will be the 50th Star Chef to create a menu for the Airline's award-winning Connoisseurs on Board food and wine program. Chef Splichal's menus will be served on all flights to Germany from 14 of the Airline's 16 U.S. gateways* for four months beginning in November 2005.

Chef Splichal's credits include catering the Emmy Awards and being named a 'Legendary Chef' by Bon Appetit. His flagship restaurant, Patina, was recently deemed one of Los Angeles's best by Gourmet magazine.

"Since the 2000 launch of our Connoisseurs on Board program, passengers have treasured the opportunity to experience world class fare from renowned chefs such as Paul Bocuse of Lyon, Daniel Boulud of New York, and Frank Zlomke of Paarl, South Africa, as they travel the world with Lufthansa," says Thomas Winkelmann, Vice President, The Americas, for Lufthansa.

Chef Splichal, a native of Spaichingen, Germany, is the founder of the Los Angeles-based Patina Group. Together with his wife Christine, he opened Patina in Los Angeles in 1989 and today heads 23 restaurants throughout California and in Las Vegas. Chef Splichal's culinary style emphasizes an enthusiasm for California's abundant resources and he is widely acknowledged as a major contributing force behind Los Angeles's growth into one of the world's premier dining capitals.

"As a chef, I have already tackled the challenges of providing great meals on land and at sea, presenting Patina meals at places like the Hollywood Bowl and a luxury cruise line. To take to the skies was the next logical step," stated Splichal. "Not only do Lufthansa and I share in our German heritage, but we also share in a commitment to innovation, quality and world-class dining. I can trust Lufthansa to showcase my dishes the same way they would be served at Patina."

Transforming Gourmet Meals for Sky-High Travel

While many airlines claim celebrity chefs as in-flight food consultants, Lufthansa enlists a master chef and a world-class sommelier to actively design all of the Airline's premium food and wine menus. A dedicated department of culinary experts from LSG Sky Chefs, Lufthansa's in-flight catering arm, travels the world in search of today's most celebrated Star Chefs. LSG Sky Chefs then collaborates with the selected chef for months in advance to transform his or her signature dishes for premium on-board fare.

"Chef Joachim Splichal's distinctive blend of California and French cuisine has earned him an international reputation as one of the most imaginative and talented chefs on the American culinary scene," notes Bernd Schmitt, Executive Chef, Menu Design for LSG Sky Chefs. "His Lufthansa menu features select Patina signature dishes including seared diver scallops, caramelized endive, candied ruby grapefruit supremes, star anise gastrique and micro arugula; a brulée cheesecake with sour cream sabayon; and even a roasted turkey dish in celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday."

Lufthansa expects to serve as many as a quarter million of Chef Splichal's meals during his tenure as the Airline's Star Chef.

Fine Wine Selections

No gourmet menu is complete without a choice wine, which led Lufthansa to develop "Vinothek Discoveries," the wine and spirits component of Connoisseurs On Board. The airline's own sommelier, Markus Del Monego, selects wines from around the globe to complement the participating Star Chef's menu. Del Monego is the first person ever to simultaneously hold the coveted titles of Sommelier World Champion and Master of Wine.
