Lt. Gen. Roger C. Schultz Brings Extensive Expertise in Homeland Security, WMD to UNITECH as Sr. VP for Army Operations

UNITECH®, a leader in interactive training and simulation, homeland security and technology solutions, announced today that it has named Lt. Gen. Roger C. Schultz as senior vice president for Army operations at UNITECH.

CENTREVILLE, VA (PRWEB) September 22, 2005 -- UNITECH®, a leader in interactive training and simulation, homeland security and technology solutions, announced today that it has named Lt. Gen. Roger C. Schultz as senior vice president for Army operations at UNITECH.

Previously, Lt. Gen. Schultz was director of the Army National Guard for seven years. In his 42 years of military experience, Lt. Gen. Schultz developed an expertise in training. He is also a seasoned veteran with years of emergency response duty here in the homeland.

At UNITECH, he will report directly to Earl W. Stafford, Chairman and CEO.

Having Lt. Gen. Schultz on the UNITECH team is a great honor and privilege," said Stafford, who founded UNITECH in 1988. His expertise in training both individuals and units is recognized across the Army. His insight and forward-thinking leadership will help guide UNITECH as we ready our customers for the challenges of the 21st century and beyond."

At UNITECH, Lt. Gen. Schultz will apply his extensive skills and keen knowledge to helping the Centreville-based company build on its success in customer-driven solutions.

I will be focusing our attention in areas and ways that we can assist the Army in helping them to improve the readiness of its units, active and reserve," said Lt. Gen. Schultz. The major component of readiness begins with training and UNITECH is a recognized leader in developing training and simulation exercises. UNITECH has been working with the Army in a successful partnership for many years, and Im excited to help build on that."

As longest-serving director of the 350,000-member Army National Guard, Lt. Gen. Schultz guided the formulation, development and implementation of all programs and policies affecting the Army National Guard at the National Guard Bureau in Washington, DC. As Schultz completed his tour of duty as the director, the Army Guard budget was $10.18 B, a $4.31B increase since his arrival in 1998.

Just after his arrival in the Pentagon in 1997, Lt. Gen. Schultz led a Tiger Team that focused on improving the weapons of mass destruction (WMD) response capability within the Department of Defense. The team was tasked to identify vital response tasks and capabilities demanded of the DoD in a WMD attack. Under Lt. Gen. Schultz leadership, the team developed a prototype that also better integrates Reserve Component capabilities into emergency responses.

To form that mission-critical plan, the team focused on the appropriate, substantive and integrated DoD support model to local, state and federal government authorities responding to a WMD attack.

Under Lt. Gen. Schultzs leadership, the Tiger Team noted that there was a significant void in the response community chemical, biological and radiological assessment capability. As a result, it created a DoD response capability that did not exist previously.

Today, the civil support teams are called on a daily basis as they assist with agent identification and appropriate hazard mitigation in the affected areas of unknown agent releases. In a military report, Lt. Gen. Schultz concluded that the plan represents a beginning, a start point, of a larger, multiyear effort. And it has been just that. Eleven teams were authorized in fiscal year 2005, completing the Congressional mandate to field at least one team in every state, territory, and the District of Columbia.

Lt. Gen. Schultz began active military service in 1963 and served 4 years as an enlisted Soldier. He was commissioned an infantry officer after graduating from the Iowa Military Academys Officer Candidate School.

He has served as the deputy adjutant general of the Iowa National Guard and the deputy director for operations on the Department of the Army staff. In that role, Lt. Gen. Schultz was responsible for coordinating all Department of Defense military support to civilian authorities, including disaster relief operations.

Lt. Gen. Schultz earned the Silver Star for heroism while serving in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division in 1969. His other honors include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. He was twice awarded the Purple Heart.

In so much that he has done, Roger Schultz has worked to perpetuate that seamless union between the active component and the reserve components, bringing us to this very special point in our history," Gen. Eric Shinseki, Chief of Staff of the Army, said when Lt. Gen. Schultz was promoted to lieutenant general, giving the Army veteran a third star.

Lt. Gen. Schultz earned a masters degree in public administration from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania and a bachelors degree in management from Upper Iowa University. He also attended the Army War College.
