ELVA-1 Ltd. Conducts First US Test of City-A Point to Multipoint Fixed Wireless System

An ELVA-1 42GHz fixed wireless network was successfully tested under experimental FCC license in the US. This 100 baseTx system is designed for wireless ISP, corporate WAN and VoIP services.

(PRWEB) September 23, 2005 -- In Los Gatos, near San Jose CA, Gilland Electronics has just completed initial US testing of an ELVA-1 Ltd. City-A" fixed Point to Multipoint Broadband Wireless system.

Operating under an FCC experimental license, the 100Mbps, full duplex, 40.5-43.5GHz system was tested extensively in single-path and loopback modes to demonstrate its effectiveness as a wireless ISP or WAN Ethernet communications solution. Gilland Electronics is now seeking interested corporate users or business service providers for US beta testing.

City-A is operates as a Fast Ethernet (100 baseTx) network. IP packets are automatically routed between customer premise terminals and base station switch, or through the switch to communicate between terminals, depending on software configuration.

The total single-switch capacity of the current version is 100Mbps downstream (switch to terminal) and 100Mbps upstream (terminal to switch) simultaneously, with no collisions.

Collision-free operation is assured by the following design features:
1. Downstream and upstream paths operate in different frequency bands; therefore, downstream capacity does not depend on the upstream channel load and vice-versa.
2. Terminal antennas have a very small beamwidth (0.7° to 2°). The high frequency data stream transmitted to the switch from one terminal does not affect the data stream received from the switch by other terminals.
3. All terminals transmit in TDMA mode, in sequence, according to instructions issued by the switch. The period and duration for any terminal is assigned during the system configuration or automatically.

City-A was also designed to provide the necessary transmission quality for VoIP communications. Downstream delay is less than 1 ms, and upstream delay is 0.5 to 1 ms per operating terminal. A system operator can also transmit E1 streams encapsulated in IP. ELVA-1 has demonstrated in factory field tests that more than 20 uncompressed and more than 160 compressed E1 streams can be transmitted simultaneously in a City-A System.

A system operator can deploy many City-A systems in the same area. Each City-A Switch may be equipped with either a 30°, 45°, 60° or 90° sector antenna. The operator can also deploy 4, 6, 8 or 12 switches at the same location, using opposite polarization in adjacent sectors, increasing the total network capacity to 1.2 Gbps full-duplex over multiple switches. To extend the network, additional cells can be deployed in adjacent areas.

At the time of this press release, ELVA-1 had just reported excellent results from their current R&D program for a 1Gbps per switch, full-duplex version of City-A, which they expect to be ready for production by the end of 2005.
