THEBOOKINSIDER.COM: Please tell us a little about your novel, "Secret Players." And what compelled you to write it?
CARL NELSON: I grew up during WWII when every kid joined to fight. We all hated the Japs. Even today the word Japs conjures evil images among those who fought them. I also lived in Japan for several years and observed the Japanese culture. I knew there was residual hatred among the Japanese. I hypothesized "what would happen to two men who faced each other during that war? What could their lives be like? What if they became powerful and later met. What about their hatred?
THEBOOKINSIDER.COM: Before you became a writer of historical fiction, were you a reader of this genre? Did any particular authors influence you?
CARL NELSON: Yes, I always read James Mitchner's stuff also James Clavelle.
THEBOOKINSIDER.COM: How did your economic, political and military background influence the storylines and events in "Secret Players?" How did you come up with the plot?
CARL NELSON: I'm a professor of International business as well as a former navy captain. These careers took me all around the world. I have written seven non-fiction books about international economics and trade. The plot evolved as the characters, three strong men and four strong women interacted during the last 50 years of the 20th century.
THEBOOKINSIDER.COM: How did you choose the title "Secret Players?"
CARL NELSON: I'm not good with titles but after trying many I stumbled up the undercurrent of this book which is the spooky strategic side of international life.
