Following a series of conversations between design & fashion accessory darling Mixx, Inc. and John Geraci, the creator of Grafedia -- an NYU graduate student project turned techno fascination -- Mixx added a Grafedia link to one of its Fall 2005 bags. There's no microchip sewn in the lining, just a design element underlined in blue.
Once recognized as a "Grafedia" anyone can email, or text message from a cell phone to receive further communication. In this case, the design is a heart shape with "Arf" underlined. Those in the know then email or text message firstname.lastname@example.org to see what's up.
"We are always interested in adding dimensionality to our products and additional forms of communication with our customers" says Juliette Fassett, founder and president of Mixx. "We waited for the right opportunity for a relevant experience that's contextual, humorous, and interesting. It also had to be the right type of product design element to honor the original intent of Grafedia, which is a street art movement crossed with communications technology."
The Arf Tote, which hit the shelves at Urban Outfitters in mid September, is already showing up on the radar of leading trend watchers. Recently selected as a case study for presentation by WGSN London, the Arf Tote is being considered a potential branding and guerilla marketing model for other fashion makers to follow.
According to Fassett, the blend of fashion and technology via Grafedia is a completely logical next step for Mixx, which has quickly become a player in the nascent wireless fashion accessory space.
