Adam Derrick and Jay Bills were sitting around a BBQ in late 2004 pondering their futures and the world in general when Mr Derrick brought the topic of discussion around to wheelie bin cleaning. "How do you efficiently and effectively clean a wheelie bin?” he asked. Brainstorming followed and as a result, AJ Wheelie Cleaning was formed.
After devising an environmentally friendly cleaning system that could be placed on a trailer, the two men found a willing friend capable of putting it all together. With their new trailer in hand, Adam and Jay hit the roads with some canny advertising methods (they're secret!) and slowly started building a clientele. At the same time, they entered their business into the 2005 NESCAFÉ® BIG BREAK™ awards that had over 400 entries
"We are absolutely thrilled to be one of the finalists and we are now focused on pulling votes in the hope we become the overall winner and double our prize money", Mr Derrick said. "We are keen to get every person in Australia and New Zealand voting for us."
Part of their success to date has been implementing good office systems to enable the smooth running of their business. They utilize diary software, e-mail, a web site and are always contactable on their mobile phones. Customers pay by check or direct deposit. They have both domestic and commercial customers and their prices are based on a sliding scale depending on the number of bins and frequency of cleaning
"Our ultimate goal is to franchise our concept but we felt it is important we literally 'walk the talk' and fine tune our business before pursuing that side", said Mr Derrick.
After speaking with Mr Derrick, it is not hard to see why AJ Wheelie Cleaning have been so successful to date. Today, young people seem to think the world owes them everything but Adam and Jay are out to change that view by getting out there and giving their business a real go.
