Los Angeles (PRWEB) September 27, 2005
Help The Children (http://www.tohelpthechildren.org), headquartered in Los Angeles, has mobilized to support the needs of children and families displaced by the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Katrina.
The Convoy will include two trailer trucks and three mobile homes, which will be dropped in Houston and in the disaster area, to serve as temporary or permanent shelter for Hurricane Katrina evacuees. All convoy vehicles as well as several additional hauling trucks will be loaded with food and clothing and up on delivery, be deposited at official disaster relief sites under the supervision of local disaster officials.
Help The Children have joined the forces with members of the American Volunteer Reserve (AVR) http://www.americanvolunteerreserve.org to bring a Humanitarian Relief Convoy to the disaster area stricken by Hurricane Katrina. The convoy will be manned by uniformed volunteers from the California Regiment of the AVR, with the formal and official authority to deliver the convoy safely to the disaster areas so devastated by Katrina.
The most critical needs include:
1. Mobile homes (preferably drivable due to the high cost of transportation), mobile coach trailers and hauling trucks
2. Portable generators
3. Dry food  no canned food, please, the cost of transportation outweighs the cost effectiveness of this crucial mission
4. Baby food
5. Clean clothing, socks, blankets, pillows, bedding
6. Personal hygiene products
If you do not have any of above, you can always donate monetary funds. In the case of Help the Children, any funds received will be distributed at your choice directly to victims or will assist us with expenses such as fuel, insurance, travel costs, and return flights for volunteer drivers. Be assured that we are working with local transport, insurance and oil companies, hotels and airlines to donate some of these requirements at cost or even less, so your donations will be maximized to the fullest extent possible.
Your donations will go to help effected families with children and will pay for needed items and services - things such as anti-bacterial wipes, diapers, phone cards, medical care, gas and food, cash for medications and rent.
AVR is an all-volunteer organization of former and retired military personnel trained and experienced in medical, communications and disaster assistance. Volunteers.
Due to the need for even temporary shelter for the homeless victims of Hurricane Katrina, Help The Children is increasing daily the number of donated mobile homes, mobile coaches, and hauling trucks that will be used in the convoy. Many pallets of non-perishable supplies and water have been received or committed by businesses and organizations throughout the southland. All such donations are vital to the relief efforts.
Help The Children Foundation is a 501 (c) (3), not-for profit public benefit corporation organized for charitable purposes and designed to promote the welfare of children in need, including children with physical disabilities and/or life threatening diseases.
Help The ChildrenÂs Southern California volunteers are working with faith-based organizations to help collect, organize, and load the materials, which the convoy will then deliver to the disaster area. They are currently searching out similar faith-based operations in the disaster area to aid in distributing these materials to the families with children whose lives Katrina has so tragically interrupted.
If we can create a truly successful convoy, and we will, as we have 15 years experience in this field, we will immediately begin on the next, so your assistance in this time of need will certainly be a blessing for all concerned.
Many Help the Children volunteers and supporters have already offered to support the ongoing relief efforts. A number of volunteers with communications and medical skills are already en route to serve in the affected areas.
If you would like to get involved in the Katrina recovery activities, Help The Children is ready to help you to do so in rewarding ways to assist those-in-need as quickly as possible.
Thursday, September 15, President George W. Bush has asked that all Americans join in the effort to bring comfort and relief to the hundreds of thousands who have been affected by this greatest natural disaster in American history. In direct response to the President's address, we anticipate a significant increase in the number of people becoming involved.
