Today, Andy Gibbs, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of PatentCafe was recognized for his commitment to building and providing equal access to educational resources that support creativity and invention by K-12 kids. The 2005 TEC Champion Award is presented during the two day program "Inventing the Future: Close the Education Excitement Gap."

U.S. Congressman Major Owens, Chairman of the United States Congressional Black Caucus' Education Brain Trust and senior member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and the Education Technology Think Tank (ET3) presented Gibbs with the award at the 2005 ET 3 TEC Champion Award: Leaders Inventing Equitable Futures, held as part of the Congressional Black Caucus's 35th Annual Legislative Conference.

This award is presented to exceptional leaders who are promoting the 21st Century skills of inventive thinking and entrepreneurship, closing the education excitement gap, and establishing a legacy of educational empowerment in traditionally underserved communities across America.

Other award recipients, nominated by DuPont, John Hopkins University, Lockheed Martin, National Inventors Hall of Fame, and the National Education Association, included Hall of Fame inventors Dr. George Carruthers (far ultraviolet electrographic camera) and Dr. James West (electret microphone), as well as the Hon. James Perkins, Mayor Selma, AL, Dr. James Ammons, Chancellor of north Carolina Central University, Hon. Vernon Parker, Asst. Sec'y for Civil Rights, USDA, and a number of outstanding school district Superintendents and Principals.

"Business and educational leaders must work to ensure that all kids have equal access to knowledge" says Gibbs. "As an inventor, I believe that no other educational activity supercharges kids' excitement to learn science and math more than hands-on inventing."

Years before PatentCafe launched its first corporate-level patent research and intellectual property management software, Mr. Gibbs launched the Kids' Café, a free website of almost 1,000 pages that served 100s of thousands of young inventors, their parents and teachers.

In 2003, PatentCafe's Kids' Café became the core for By Kids For Kids, a revolutionary new organization with a 100% focus on the development of kid inventors and their inventions. By Kids For Kids' initiatives are now supported by the US Patent and Trademark Office, Xerox, Mattel, and many other educational, government and commercial organizations is now America's preeminent resource for kid inventors – both in the classroom, and in commerce.

Through socially responsible PatentCafe, Gibbs has funded non-profit educational programs that use invention as a learning tool, including The Academy of Applied Science (AAS) "Exploration Cybercamp" at Howard University, Washington, DC, the "Kids Invent Toys / Kids Invent Robots" program, and the Edison Young Inventors in Florida.

PatentCafe has also donated hundreds of invention and science books to grade school libraries in underserved areas, and educational science kits for in classroom hands-on learning projects. Mr. Gibbs, who authored the current Boy Scouts of America Drafting Merit Badge manual to introduce kids to updated computer aided drafting and design, has also spoken to kid inventors, parents and teachers at one-room schoolhouses to statewide kid invention competitions.

Gibbs says "The task of delivering the invention learning experience to every kid in every American school classroom is much larger than any single person or organization, but perhaps my receiving this Award will serve as a challenge to the top US companies whose very future depends on programs that will help today's kids become tomorrow's great inventors."

Mr. Gibbs is an inventor with numerous patents, is the founder and CEO of PatentCafe, was appointed by the US Secretary of Commerce to two terms on the US Patent and Trademark Office's Public Patent Advisory Committee, and serves on the Board of Directors of By Kids For Kids Co., and of the Washington, DC based Intellectual Property Owners Association http://www.IPO.org
