Mothers for Tsunami Relief: A Series of eBay Auctions for Charity

One eBay auction in honor of every life lost in the Indian Ocean tsunami? "That's the idea," says Linda O'Neill, co-founder of TheSuppliesRoom.com, an online retailer of office products, and founder of MommyTsunami.org. O'Neill has started a grassroots movement with a series of auctions at eBay with the hope of raising millions of dollars for the victims of the deadly tsunami that has left over 150,000 victims in it's devastating wake, and left countless others homeless.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 5, 2005 -- One eBay auction in honor of every life lost in the Indian Ocean tsunami? "That's the idea," says Linda O'Neill, co-founder of TheSuppliesRoom.com, an online retailer of office products, and founder of MommyTsunami.org. O'Neill has started a grassroots movement with a series of auctions at eBay with the hope of raising millions of dollars for the victims of the deadly tsunami that has left over 150,000 victims in it's devastating wake, and left countless others homeless. "As we've all witnessed, Mother Nature can be the cruelest mother of all," said Ms. O'Neill. "Many affected by the tragedy of the Indian Ocean tsunamis had very little as it were. Now they have nothing but sadness, hunger and grief. Human mothers have something in abundance to trump the seemingly indifferent wrath of Mother Nature. That something is called Love."

Several moms from a few online communities have already jumped onboard to lend O'Neill a helping hand. Auctions are now underway at eBay for various items listed under the title, 'Mothers for Tsunami Relief:A Series of eBay Auctions for Charity', and others can be found by searching for 'Mommy Tsunami'. The items include everything from T-shirts, to gift certificate shopping sprees, graphics design services, and one that is particularly dear to Ms. O'Neill's heart, a trip for two to New York City to be 'A Model For A Day'. This auction is a joint effort of O'Neill's SuppliesRoom.com and R&L Model & Talent Inc. of New York City. The proceeds from this auction will be donated to The Salvation Army, although participating auctioneers are free to choose the charity of their choice through eBays charity auction partner, Missionfish.org.

Besides the round-trip airfare for two with hotel accommodations, the winning bidder will receive a photo shoot with a professional fashion and commercial photographer, prints from the shoot, and a personal interview and counseling session with the President of R&L, Roger Talley. As one of the first commercial print modeling agencies in New York City, R&L boasts a client list that includes The ABC Network, A&E Networks, AT&T, Calvin Klein, Columbia Pictures, The David Letterman Show, L'Oreal, Microsoft, Paramount Pictures, to name just a few.

"I was delighted when Linda asked me to be a part of this auction, and even moreso when I learned that the proceeds were earmarked for The Salvation Army", said Talley, a veteran of the Vietnam war. "In every disaster case that I can recall, The Salvation Army shows up with their sleeves rolled up and ready for work until the job is done, not caring who gets the credit."

Becki Sekerak, owner of BeadedThings.com was one of the first to respond by posting an auction for a $100 shopping spree at her online store. I watched in amazement when within minutes the auction was bid up to $103 – and by the end of the evening was at $259. I began to realize the reality of what can happen when we mobilize and come together. There is an invisible army of mothers out there who either own home businesses, or who have valuable skills to offer, items to donate, or money to bid. Suddenly Lindas goal of 150,000 auctions doesnt seem so unreachable."
