Stellus Systems™ Sets New Standard for Consumer-level GPS Receivers for Smartphones and Handheld Devices High-Performance GPS Receiver Transforms Mobile Devices Into User-Friendly Navigational Tools

Stellus System, Inc., a leading system integrator of wireless communication products, announced today the SSI-SDIO-1000, the first high-performance, rugged GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver with a SDIO (Secure Digital Input/Output) interface designed for power conscience consumer-level applications. Stellus’ unique design enables mobile devices, such as Smartphones and connected PDAs, to receive GPS signals and, together with off-the-shelf GPS mapping software, transforms them into navigational receivers.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) January 5, 2005 -- Stellus System, Inc., a leading system integrator of wireless communication products, announced today the SSI-SDIO-1000, the first high-performance, rugged GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver with a SDIO (Secure Digital Input/Output) interface designed for power conscience consumer-level applications. Stellus’ unique design enables mobile devices, such as Smartphones and connected PDAs, to receive GPS signals and, together with off-the-shelf GPS mapping software, transforms them into navigational receivers.

The SSI-SDIO-1000 is a GPS accessory that puts In-Vehicle Navigation and find-and-locate capabilities for home or business addresses, ATMs, restaurants and recreational activities (such as golf, boating and hiking), at your fingertips – a map-in-your-hand that helps you get where you’re going.

GPS technology has been available for many years, yet only recently have new innovations, which include hardware, software and services, become available that make day-to-day consumer use practical. “Until now, consumer concerns with many add-on GPS products have been that the performance is marginal and that they are hard to use,” said Craig Conkling, CEO of Stellus Systems. “When Stellus designed the SSI-SDIO-1000, we focused on key consumer requirements. Products must be rugged, user-friendly, cost effective, and work with off-the-shelf mapping software,” he added.

Stellus’ innovative design combines a high-performance GPS antenna and receiver, with a SDIO interface IC (integrated circuit), in a compact housing that fits in your brief case or pocket, and weighs less than one ounce. The SSI-SDIO-1000 consumes less than 200 mW in tracking mode and has an accuracy of 3 meters (CEP – 50% of the time) and 6 meters (2DRMS – 95% of the time). In addition, it is compatible with both Pocket PC and Palm-based operating systems. And since today’s mobile devices commonly have a SDIO interface, it is a perfect fit.

“Sarantel believes that Stellus has a winning solution,” said Brad Hurte, President of Sarantel U.S.A. He continued, “Our GeoHelix antenna provides excellent performance for handheld products. GPS applications continue to proliferate, and Sarantel’s unique antenna solutions are making their way into a variety of markets, worldwide.”

“In the future, as new applications for GPS receivers become available, the consumer will no longer need to carry several costly and bulky mobile devices to do the same functions. Simply plug in a Stellus GPS receiver, and location-specific information and services can be retrieved through your wireless connection, whether that connection is cellular or Wi-Fi,” Conkling envisions.

Stellus Systems will introduce the SSI-SDIO-1000 at the Consumer Electronic Show, CES 2005, in Las Vegas, NV that takes place January 6th– 9th. The company will be in the SD Card Association Pavilion, Booth: 15214, Show location: LVCC CEN.

About Sarantel:
Sarantel's PowerHelix™ antennas are the result of over 20 years of research and development, and are the subject of over 100 world-wide patents.

Based on the company's patented PowerHelix™ technology, these balanced antennas offer the benefits of small size, exceptional beamwidth and low Near Field. When, for example, they are used with portable GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, more satellites are acquired, no bulky ground plane is needed, and a predictable response regardless of proximity to conductors, other antennas or human tissue, is obtained.
