“Size Matters, Too,” Says the Velvet Voice of Size Diversity, Veronica Cook-Euell

Veronica Cook-Euell’s message is simple: “Size is the other diversity, the one everybody tends ignore.” She’s in the third season of broadcasting that message weekly via Ohio radio station WCRS and her website, http://sizematterstoo.com/.

“We tackle the ‘Elephant in the Office’ that everyone usually wants to hide,” the size diversity expert says. “We tackle the tough topics most people choose to ignore. For example, we address complicated issues of size in the workplace, accommodations, and the office diet, and the hostile work environment these may cause.”

Each week’s show can be listened to free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with online/on demand airing at http://sizematterstoo.com. The website also has helpful information for anyone interested in understanding size diversity.

“The goal of ‘Size Matters, Too’ is to increase awareness of issues important to people of size and the persons they work with, live with, are friends with, and socialize with,” Cook-Euell says. Guests have included professionals in the size movement, activists, authors, teachers, scholars, writers, speakers, psychologists, and sociologists. “We cover topics in a wide range of issues faced by people of size.”

Cook-Euell believes that size is used as a basis for pre-judging people without considering other factors. “Size and body image play an important role in both how one is perceived by others and in how one perceives the world,” she explains.

“More specifically, we advocate that size and body image are universally relative to all cultures, races, genders, class, religions, ages, et cetera,” she states. “The bulk of our work is focused on including size as more than simply a condition that society must avoid, ignore, seek to transform, resist, struggle, and contend. Size itself should not be viewed as a social problem, but instead as a legitimate dimension of diversity that merits a full body of interdisciplinary scholarship and research.”

Cook-Euell has a background that includes more than 20 years with the federal government and service for the city of Toledo, Ohio as a cabinet member in the position of Executive Director, Affirmative Action. She holds a master’s degree in Psychology, Diversity Management Specialization, from Cleveland State University, and is a Certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and certified Global Career Development Facilitator. Her recently published article, “Size--The Other Diversity,” was featured on the cover of the August 2004 issue of MOSAICS, the Society of Human Resource Management's Diversity Newsletter.
