Shared City/School District Project Maximizes Use of Public Funds, Design Team to Receive American Institute of Architects Award

Edison Elementary School/Pacific Park Joint-Use Project One of the First of Its Kind

Denver, CO (PRWEB) January 7, 2005 -- Leidenfrost/Horowitz & Associates, Inc. (LHA), the Executive Architect, in association with Katherine Diamond, FAIA, Design Architect (now Principal with RNL Design-Los Angeles), will be recognized by the American Institute of Architects San Fernando Valley Chapter for design excellence for the Edison Elementary School/Pacific Park Joint-use project in Glendale, California.

The project is one of the first of its kind in that it implements a shared use and joint development between two separate owners, the Glendale Unified School District and the City of Glendale. The shared use of key facilities by both the City and the School District maximizes investment of limited public money. The shared facilities include the childrens library, computer lab, the multi-purpose gymnasium, playground, multipurpose fields and parking sites.

This approach reduced the redundancy of building similar facilities in the neighborhood while meeting the needs of both entities. If separate facilities had been built, the design team contends the projects would have cost at least an additional $5,000,000. The facility opened in 2003.

This project is a great example of doing more with less. Shared use/joint development is an essential strategy allowing cash and land poor local agencies to provide better services to their constituents," says Ms. Diamond.

The leadership of the City and the School District of Glendale are truly to be commended. Instead of allowing the inertia of ingrained habits and the risks of shared -use to become the deciding factor, they focused on the value to the community and worked together in partnership to create this great project that serves users of all ages, and creates a true multi-functional, multi-generational center for the city," adds
Vincent Hanna Petito, AIA, Project Director for LHA.

As the Executive Architect, Leidenfrost / Horowitz & Associates had to satisfy two sets of client standards and deliver a Division of State Architect approved project. The project breaks new ground and invents new rules for joint development. The partnership between the City, the School District, the design team, the construction manager and the construction team allowed this community dream to become reality.

The award will be presented at the chapters annual design awards banquet on January 29, 2005 at the Sheraton Universal in Universal City, California.
