American Values Under Siege" Explained by New Book Author in Speech January 13
American values and institutions are under stress, from terrorist attacks by opposing worldviews abroad to widespread domestic skepticism that American traditions are more valuable than others.

Devine, author and director of the Center for the Study of American Values, Bellevue University, will explain to audiences in person and via the Internet his new book, In Defense of the West, American Values Under Siege," at a speech and book signing at noon EST, Thursday, Jan. 13 in Washington, D.C.

In Defense of the West" tells the story of the Western vision and its American values and institutions in a simple, easily communicated manner to a nation that is quickly losing an understanding of its roots.

In Defense of the West Donald J. Devine asks whether these values can survive or be defended in a West that questions all traditions. Devine raises questions that are answered as the chapters develop, keeping readers engaged, while preventing quick dismissals of the concerns held by those not inclined to support the book's thesis - that Western vision and American values are worth questioning or defending.
Devine has been a driving force behind Bellevue Universitys Center for the Study of American Values and its Kirkpatrick Signature Series, a cluster of courses required for graduation. The goal of the Center and Signature Series is to transmit Western vision and values to the next generation of Americans.
Donald J. Devine, former Associate Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Syracuse University. From 1981-1985, he served as Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Currently, he is President of the Donald Devine Company, which provides policy and management consultation to government, nonprofit, and political clients; Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of American Values, Bellevue University, Nebraska; Adjunct Scholar for The Heritage Foundation; and columnist for The Washington Times
