Why Is the Teacher's Butt So Big? Plus 111 Other Mysteries of Public Education" is Debra's attempt at educating the public about the absurdities of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and peculiarities of public schools. This eight-year teaching veteran feels while NCLB may have been created with noble thoughts, not only is this landmark education reform unrealistic, it is creating havoc in public schools.

I hate No Child Left Behind for five basic reasons," says Debra. They are

1)It is wrong to assume all children, who come in with different backgrounds and abilities, can achieve some artificial level of proficiency at the same rate.

2)It puts no responsibility on students or parents and never considers the fact that some students aren't motivated to learn or do well on tests.

3) It's based on a single year-end test which compares completely different sets of students from one year to the next.

4) It compares test score growth between the states, yet states don't give the same test and have different expectations for students.

5) It fails to recognize that the achievement gap" is due to the socio-economic background of the student, and isn't about race.

Besides campaigning against No Child Left Behind, Debra also ponders about other things that happen at public schools. She wants to know things like, Will schools ever have enough money so they can quit blaming their problems on not enough money?" Why do they think suspending students is punishment" for bad behavior?" Why do we make kindergartners write phonetically spelled sentences? Will it make them a better writer in high school?" Why do we think homework is so important? Students at underperforming schools get homework and their scores are still low?" Will teachers ever be smart enough to teach students, or why do they think a solution for improving schools is more teacher training?"

"As I keep stressing, I hope my book becomes the touchstone of the new education revolution in America," comments Debra. The book is highly recommended reading for teachers at all grade levels and parents who have children enrolled in public schools.

Debra, who this year moved from teaching fifth grade to being a high school on-campus suspension teacher, will be a guest on the The Pete Wilson" show, on KGO radio, San Francisco, Thursday, October 27th, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. to discuss her book and the state of public schools in America today.
