Volunteer Center of Madison County Matches Hurricane Evacuees with Housing

The Volunteer Center of Madison County has matched Hurricane Evacuees with housing and they are almost half-way home. Help is still needed for their Adopt a Family Program.

(PRWEB) October 8, 2005 -- The Volunteer Center of Madison County has matched Hurricane Evacuees with housing and they are almost half-way home. Help is still needed for their Adopt a Family Program.

“We are truly grateful to the generosity of the Madison County community in providing the short-term needs for our evacuees,” noted Sheila McFerran, Executive Director of The Volunteer Center. “We are now planning for the longer term need for housing and have a waiting list of evacuees seeking a longer-term home,” she said.

The Volunteer Center has partnered with area churches to house evacuees and as of today, 270 people have been placed in longer-term housing. Housing is still needed for 313 individuals. You can support the Volunteer Center’s Adopt a Family Program by simply paying their rent for 3 months.

The Volunteer Center has taken housing requests for 526 people over the last month from Hurricane Katrina. The recent Hurricane Rita brought an additional 57 people with housing needs to our area.

Because of the disaster, evacuees are in desperate need of transportation and finding convenient housing has been a challenge for The Volunteer Center. You can also purchase $25 Gas Cards at Wal-Mart as transportation is still a need for families in order to get to job interviews and daily activities.

For further information on how you can support The Volunteer Center’s Adopt a Family program, please call 539-7797.

The Volunteer Center partners with the community to mobilize volunteers and provide solutions to local challenges. It has served as a volunteer resource for more than 150 non-profit agencies in Madison County since 1969.
