Publisher Applauds Senate Action on Violence Against Women Act

Brighid's Fire Books editor, whose latest release is a gripping tale of an abuse survivor, says novel vividly portrays what could happen when women don't have legal protections.

(PRWEB) October 8, 2005 -- This week, the Senate adopted legislation that would reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, a move that was particularly welcome news for the publisher of science fiction adventure "The Dragon's Lair."

"An important part of the decision to bring Lair to the public was its wrenching portrayal of what living with violence does to women," says Dawn Rivers Baker, editor at Brighid's Fire Books. "It's good to see that the Senate recognizes that the protections in the Violence Against Women Act need to remain in place."

"The Dragon's Lair" (ISBN 0-9713278-2-3), described by the publisher as "science fiction chick lit," was written by debut novelist Lisa Guilfoil and published by Brighid's Fire Books in March 2005. Its heroine, Skye Dakota, has spent a decade rebuilding her life after escaping from the physical and psychological torture of her abuser, only to find herself dragged against her will back into the life she had vowed to leave forever.

"In this galaxy, for this heroine, there were no victims' services and no bringing perpetrators to justice. The things she is forced to endure and the way she escapes a second abuser serve as a shocking reminder of how terribly necessary this legislation is," says Baker.

A companion bill to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act still awaits action in the House.

The 1994 Violence Against Women Act expired on September 30th. According to a report published by Congressional Quarterly, "Women's groups say the 1994 law has been effective in reducing rapes and murders, providing services to victims, and allowing for expanded training of social service providers and law enforcement officials."
