Feature Walls Are Dead?

The hows and why's of the use of feature walls in domestic or commercial interior design

(PRWEB) October 9, 2005 -- "I think I'd like a feature wall in Aubergine in the dining room, and perhaps a feature wall of Charcoal in the living room, a feature wall at the entry - definitely Blood Red."
Does this sound familiar to any of you?

Yes, it is the all too common hum of the feature wall tune. It is like the pop song that you love the first time you hear it then after it is thrashed on the radio and played at least twice every hour - you soon loathe the very thought of it says award winning Lee Brown Interior Designer from www.interiordezine.com

This is how I feel about feature walls. I have used them for years in offices and restaurants and they work really well. You expect drama and movement in these areas. But after visiting numerous "Open Homes" on the market recently I felt like the interior decorators had asked their children to use their crayons to pick the color schemes.

Ugh! Too many colors and no flow or harmony between the spaces.
Don't despair, there is hope for the future of feature walls if we use them in the manner in which they were created.

The term "feature" should be the clue. Yes, use them to highlight an important area and make a focal point in your home to create your feature.

For example a dramatic wall in your entrance to create a positive first impression and show off a stunning piece of artwork or use it in your living room around your fireplace once again to create that space as your focal point in the room, but please don't use them in every room.
Remember, if in doubt go for the subtle effect and gradually add drama and color with your furnishings and decoration.

Think about that feature wall. Is it because there is nothing else? People should try alternatives with feature pieces well lit and placed. When this is the focus with a "feature wall", then There could be some hope left for the future of feature walls!
