American Collectors Insurance Announces Their Top 10 Eighties’ Collector Vehicles
American Collectors Insurance Announces A New Decade of Collector Cars…The Eighties.
Cherry Hill, NJ (PRWEB) October 9, 2005 -- Did you ever hear the saying, “Everything that is old is new again?” Well, that’s especially true in the case of the 1980’s. Eighties’ classics are back in a big way. Listed below are the top ‘80’s vehicles for which customers of American Collectors Insurance are requesting specialized coverage:
1. Ford Mustang
2. Chevy Camaro / Pontiac Trans Am
3. Buick Grand National
4. Nissan 280Z
5. Chevy Corvette
6. Pontiac Fiero
7. Lotus Esprit
8. DeLorean DMC-12
9. Oldsmobile Cutlass Hurst Edition
10. Ferrari 308
“Talk about early ‘60’s classics and people think of big cruisers with fins,” says Jill Bookman, CEO of American Collectors Insurance, Inc. “Talk about early ‘70’s classics and people think Muscle Car. Talk about classic cars from the ‘80’s and people say, Huh? In those years, Americans were heading out of a gas shortage and wanted economy, not performance. But like every decade, certain vehicles came out of the 80’s that have become not only staples of pop culture, but of history as well. That makes them collectible.”
Additional Information About The Top Ten
Ford Mustang – Since the original 1964 ½, the Mustang has been a very popular vehicle, and 80’s Mustangs are no exception to this trend. So, it’s a “no brainer” that these vehicles would become highly desirable collector cars in no time. One of the most attractive is the SVO 20th Anniversary edition, with a limited production run of about 5,200.
Pontiac Trans Am & Chevy Camaro –Sharing platforms, these vehicles have stand-out trim levels and packages, making them highly sought-after. A fully restored 1987 2-door convertible IROC-Z is currently worth about $20,000.
Buick Grand National - 80’s and performance are two words not commonly used together, but when talking about the Buick Grand National it is common to hear them in the same sentence. Dominating the drag strips in the 80’s, the Grand National came equipped with factory turbos and air-to-air intercoolers. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Grand National is such a popular performance vehicle.
Nissan 280ZX - This is one of the few rear-wheel drive Asian imported vehicles of the 80’s. The 280ZX came in two versions, a two-seater and 2+2 (two doors and four seats) with an optional t-top. These vehicles were stylish and luxurious while maintaining true sports car handling and power, making them attractive to a variety of drivers.
Chevy Corvette – The Chevrolet Corvette has been an American Icon from its first day in dealer showrooms. This original American sports car has been featured in movies (Less Than Zero and Weird Science) and even stars in its own song (“Little Red Corvette” by Prince). Most importantly, almost every guy in his life has pictured himself actually driving one of these beauties.
Pontiac Fiero – If you saw Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, then you know all about the Fiero. It was the only North American mid-engine mass-produced automobile, and the only 2-seater ever produced by Pontiac. A well-preserved ’84 Indy Pace Car is currently worth about $8,500.
Lotus Esprit - “Bond, James Bond” is the reason for the outbreak in popularity of this fine vehicle. First seen in The Spy Who Loved Me, and then again in For Your Eyes Only, this car is as suave and debonair as its 007 counterpart, making it an obvious choice as a classic. A 1988 Lotus Esprit in excellent condition is currently worth about $20,000.
DeLorean – Production started in 1981 and ended in 1983 after only producing about 9,200 DeLoreans. Today the Back To The Future car has become a very hard car to find, causing the price of a fully restored ’81 DeLorean to be worth about $25,000.
Oldsmobile Cutlass Hurst Edition - Hurst… do we need to say more? The 15th Anniversary Edition hit the streets in black with silver rocker panels. All of these classics had a bulge hood, rear spoiler, modified 307, 3:73 gear ratio, dual exhaust and a Hurst Lightning Rod shifter to complete the package. These upgrades made sure the driver next to you knew it wasn’t just a Cutlass; it was a Hurst.
Ferrari 308 – Many refer to the Magnum P.I., car as an icon of the 80’s. The “Magnum” Ferraris are undoubtedly responsible for much of the mystique and desire for these vehicles. One of the models used in the series, a 1984 308 GTS QV, is currently worth about $35,000 in good condition.
