Hispanic CREO Brings 2005 Conference on Parental Choice in Education to Dallas Oct. 13-15
George P. Bush, Ted Cruz and singer Jon Secada are among keynote guests.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (PRWEB) October 10, 2005 -- The Hispanic Council for Reform and Education Options (Hispanic CREO) will host its 2005 conference October 13-15, 2005 in Dallas. With a theme of “Seize the American Dream: Parents Leading The Movement," the event features national Hispanic leaders, including George P. Bush, Ted Cruz and Jon Secada.
The event – the group’s third annual conference -- includes a gala and HEROES awards, breakout sessions and “El Grito Del Pueblo”, a town hall open to the public. The conference’s goal is to reaffirm the great interest from parents, educators and legislators to ensure access to excellent educational opportunities for Hispanic families, and discuss the challenges and work ahead to achieve educational equality.
“We are also celebrating the involvement of parent leaders who further advance the school choice movement in their cities,” said Rebeca Nieves Huffman, CEO. “Our purpose is to be a national voice for the right of Hispanic families to access all educational options and to be an agent for equity and quality in education – and this event is designed to help us bring more awareness and build support for our purpose.”
Hispanic students are statistically underserved in the public school system. According to a Harvard University study, only 53% of Hispanic students in public high schools graduate. Of those, only 1 in 7 is prepared for college.
“Our voice continues to grow and be heard as we demand educational opportunities for our children,” said Huffman. “We want conference participants to walk away empowered and with tangible tools to work with.”
George P. Bush will address attendees during Thursday evening’s opening event. He was recently recognized in Time as one of the most powerful emerging Hispanics in the nation. He is an attorney with Akin Gump in Dallas.
Also on Thursday evening, Grammy Award winning performer Jon Secada will speak about his personal educational experience as a young Cuban immigrant in Miami, and also performs for attendees. Secada has sold more than 6 million albums and was appointed to National Committee on Hispanic Excellence and Betterment.
