Amsterdam Public Library Network "Checks Out" TAGSYS' RFID Track and Trace Application

Item-level RFID tagging technology enables enhanced customer service and increased library management efficiency.

Amsterdam (PRWEB) October 12, 2005 -- TAGSYS, the global leader in item-level RFID infrastructure, announced today that the Amsterdam Public Library has adopted the company’s RFID-based library management solutions across its 25 library branches in the City of Amsterdam. The solution is powered by various RFID reading stations that allow for the check in and checkout of books, and efficient renewal and inventory controls that are reliable, accurate and secure. TAGSYS’ partner Autocheck Systems BV, a specialist in library security and implementation of Selfservice systems for handling library materials, is leading the systems integration and providing the software interface with the library’s LMS (library management system). Together, the package streamlines the book handling process and increases the efficiency of organizing and maintaining the network’s immense collection of books and media.

Traditionally, libraries have relied on employees for manually scanning each item as it went through the book handling process. As a result, valuable staff resources were directed to time-consuming checkout and inventory management procedures, while patrons faced long lines and moderate customer service due to the demands placed on library staff. The deployment of RFID-based library material handling systems provides the Amsterdam Public Library branches with the ability to computerize the entire library material handling process. Library staff are relieved of checkout duties and can spend more time providing other customer services to library patrons.

Increased Checkout Efficiency and Security

Amsterdam Public Library branches are now benefiting from a simplified checkout process. The compact and ergonomic self-checkout standalone module from Autocheck Systems BV integrates TAGSYS’ RFID readers and antennas and allows library patrons to easily checkout media on their own in an efficient and private manner. Users place the borrowed library materials (up to several items at once) onto the RFID detection area and follow the instructions to validate the transaction; touch-screen monitor and messages help guide borrowers through the process from start to finish. TAGSYS’ Library Security Gates located at the exits ensure that only materials that have been properly checked out can leave the building. Non-deactivated security features on RFID tags applied to items trigger the gate’s alarm while simultaneously notifying the library staff.

Streamlined Inventory Control

Prior to adopting RFID, the library branches relied on their employees to administer the time-consuming task of managing the vast amount of inventory housed across multiple shelves. By employing TAGSYS' Library Inventory Reader, staff will be able to easily identify items on library shelves. The RFID reader performs fast and accurate inventory checks as well as search for specific items (re-shelving, on-hold management, etc.) and enables instant data capture as soon as the reader is passed alongside the items on the shelves. By eliminating the need to remove items from the shelves and handle them individually, collection management becomes a less tedious task that will allow Amsterdam Public Library branches to perform checks more frequently throughout the year.

“TAGSYS leads the industry in developing item-level RFID solutions and certifying international standards for library management,” said Elie Simon, CEO of TAGSYS. “Using RFID, the Amsterdam Public Library network has emerged from the labor intensive management systems of a bygone era that was based on bar codes. With the right tools in place to automate the material handling process, the library has increased the efficiency of their material management systems and increased the level of customer service on the library floor.”
