Public Health Officials Need to Abandon Flu Vaccines and Adopt Methods to Build Natural Immunity

Due to gene mutations in flu viruses, vaccines are doomed to fail and should not be solely relied upon during the flu season. Dietary supplements can be used to activate the innate immune system and effectively ward off flu symptoms and even reduce mortality rates. Free online guides on how young children and seniors can fight the flu without vaccines are now available.

San Dimas, CA (PRWEB) October 14, 2005 -- Plans to combat flu virus epidemics should not solely rely upon problematic or ineffective vaccines, or expensive medications that are in limited supply, says Bill Sardi, president of Knowledge of Health, Inc., a California-based consumer health advocate.

Current plans to combat seasonal flu viruses are primarily confined to vaccines that are intended to develop antibodies as part of the acquired immune system while public health officials overlook the innate immune system that can be boosted with dietary supplements to ward off flu viruses and minimize mortality, says Sardi. Studies show only about 3 out of 10 senior adults and young children (under the age of 2 years) will develop sufficient antibodies after vaccination to protect themselves from the flu, he says.

Not everyone infected with the flu develops symptoms, says Sardi. Some people mount a defense that keeps the viral attack in check, he says. Dietary supplements, such as vitamin C and E, and zinc, may play a useful role in boosting white blood cells, natural killer cells and T(thymus)-cells that digest and remove viruses.

Furthermore, Sardi says there is ample evidence that supplemental selenium, a trace mineral, can help prevent DNA mutations that produce the virulent forms of influenza. Supplemental vitamin D may also help normalize the immune system so it won’t over-react and cause tissue damage in the lungs, says Sardi. There is also an herbal supplement that is well documented to shorten the duration and limit the symptoms of a bout with the flu, but few people are aware of it, Sardi says. These documented approaches to influenza control are being overlooked by public health officials, he says.

“I’m dismayed to see public health officials urge citizens to obtain flu shots with vaccines that usually don’t confer immunity for the specific flu virus in circulation,” Sardi emphasizes. Furthermore, some flu vaccines still are loaded with a significant amount of mercury (thimerosal) that can be problematic for very young children, as young as 6 months of age, who pediatricians now recommend be vaccinated.

Additionally, the nasal flu vaccine contains live viral particles that may shed from the vaccinated individual for days after inoculation and spread to family members and friends who have compromised immune systems, such as diabetics, asthmatics, smokers, infants, retirees, individuals with autoimmune disorders (lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) or taking immune-suppressant drugs. One study shows the nasal flu vaccine increases the risk for asthma by 400 percent among children.

Two free online reports, one on what seniors can do to combat the flu without vaccines, and the other a guide for parents on how to care for young children this flu season, complete with references to take to pediatricians, are available at www.knowledgeofhealth.com
