Canada Recognized as Leader of Pandemic Preparedness and Supplier of Tamiflu- CIDRAP Warns US Must Improve Avian Flu Preparedness

The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy reports the US lags behind Canada in pandemic planning and will experience a shortage of Tamiflu in the event of an outbreak of Avian Flu. Canada is a recognized world leader in pandemic preparedness and supplier of Tamiflu and companies like LePharmacy.com are reporting a surge in orders for Tamiflu and other prescription medications to Americans fearful of proposed waiting lists for prescription medications needed to protect themselves and their families.

(PRWEB) October 17, 2005 -- The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota recently posted a report on their website stating the United States lags behind Canada in pandemic planning.

The report, prepared by the non-profit group Trust for America’s Health (TFAH), also stated that the US isn’t ready for pandemic flu and should prepare quickly. Among the recommendations made by the group is the need to obtain sufficient antiviral medication for treating the flu and determining who should receive the limited supply of medication. The report states "The US would be impacted by the global implications as soon as a pandemic outbreak occurred in any part of the world due to the interdependence of economies. Sectors, such as hospitals and the health care system, which rely on supplies manufactured in other parts of the world, including Asia, would feel immediate repercussions and supply shortages.”

Canada, on the other hand, has a multi-faceted approach to preparing for an influenza pandemic and other infectious disease outbreaks. One component of Canada’s plan is establishing a domestic pandemic vaccine supply capacity. Canada is the first country in the world to plan for a secure vaccine supply through the contracting of a domestic supplier. "There is a limited global supply of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and, in the event of a pandemic, this supply would quickly become unavailable. Purchasing antivirals now is a prudent step in ensuring Canada is well-prepared to respond to an influenza pandemic," explained Dr. David Butler-Jones, Chief Public Health Officer of Canada.

Many Americans are already taking advantage of Canada’s supply of Tamiflu and the lower cost of high quality prescription medications available there.

“I travel a lot and need to protect myself and my family and I don’t want to be told that I am on a waiting list when an outbreak occurs,” says Jill Morfey, a corporate trainer from Simi Valley, California. Ms. Morfey recently purchased Tamiflu from www.LePharmacy.com, a Canadian Internet Pharmacy Intermediary that has been providing thousands of Americans with high quality, low cost prescription medications for over four years.

“Many of our customers are expressing concern that health care workers and other essential service personnel would be first in line for the limited supply of Tamiflu in the US so they would not be considered priority cases in the event of an outbreak and they are being proactive” says Ross McKinlay, Sales Director at www.LePharmacy.com.
