Americans And Europeans Migrating To Canada For Tamiflu, Roche Sales Skyrocket

The CBC reports a surge in orders for Tamiflu by Canadian Pharmacies. Worldwide supply shortages are leading Americans and Europeans to Canada, a recognized world leader in pandemic preparedness, to fill the void. Roche Pharmaceutical, the manufacturer of Tamiflu, struggles to keep up with demand and begins discussions with generic drugmakers to ease it's monopoly grip on the drug and to discourage illegal production. These discussions are not expected to ease supply concerns anytime soon. Leading Canadian Internet Pharmacy intermediary www.LePharmacy.com issues warning about poor quality drugs from any company offering Tamiflu without a prescription.

(PRWEB) October 24, 2005 -- This week, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported a 10-fold increase in Tamiflu orders from Canadian Pharmacies in the past month. Tamiflu is the only drug known to treat the deadly H5N1 Avian Flu virus.

Worldwide, orders for Tamiflu are coming in faster than Roche can immediately fill. It is estimated that it will take Roche two years just to complete the United Kingdom’s stockpile order to treat 14.6 million of its citizens. MSNBC reported on September 23, 2005 that there are only enough pills on hand in the US to treat 2.3 million people. This has Americans and Europeans very concerned and they are looking to Canada to fill the void. Americans are again looking to their northern brethren to assist them in their time of need, much like the flu shot shortage of 2004.

“Canada is a recognized world leader in pandemic preparedness “ said Ujjal Dosanj, Canada’s National Minister of Health. ”Everyone in the U.S. and Europe knows someone or has a relative in Canada and they know what stringent health standards we have here, so they feel very secure purchasing Tamiflu from a reputable source,” states Ross McKinlay, Director of Sales for www.LePharmacy.com, a leading Canadian Internet Pharmacy intermediary.

In January 2004, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged the world to stockpile Tamiflu, causing sales to explode. For the first half of this year, sales surged to $456 million. By comparison, total sales were $76 million and $134 million for 2001 and 2002, respectively. Roche Pharmaceutical, the Swiss based manufacturer, has conceded to international pressure and agreed to meet with four generic drugmakers to discuss rights for making Tamiflu pills, as fears mount that they are unable to keep up with demand. Roche has doubled its Tamiflu manufacturing capacity in each of the last two years and plans a similar expansion next year, including manufacturing Tamiflu in some of its U.S. factories.

These production agreements are not yet established. This has not kept many third world and counterfeit manufacturers from creating copycat drugs, which may not even contain the curative active ingredients required to combat Avian Flu.

“Beware of those internet pharmacies offering Tamiflu without any prescription required or an on-line doctor provided. No reputable pharmacist would dispense any prescription drugs without one. If there is no prescription required, it will not be Roche and you cannot guarantee the quality. It might even be out of Turkey or some other unregulated country.” added Ross McKinlay of www.LePharmacy.com.
