HelpBeacon.com Releases Personal Emergency Strobe

Recent hurricanes prompt HelpBeacon.com to release its battery-operated strobe ahead of schedule.

(PRWEB) October 27, 2005 -- Helpbeacon.com distributes flashing strobes for those who need to be located in an emergency or for recreational purposes. The handheld strobe is designed to attract attention with its rapid xenon-powered flash, visible up to three miles. It was released ahead of schedule, because of the effects of this year’s hurricanes. “We decided to release these strobes early when we thought of the thousands of faces trapped in darkness with no way of alerting emergency personnel of their whereabouts,” said HelpBeacon president Jaye Skaggs.

The US Coast Guard-approved HelpBeacon is a redesigned version of a personal rescue flasher used by the US Marines in Viet Nam. The newer technology and more consumer-oriented ergonomic design, replaces an incandescent bulb with xenon flash technology that delivers up to sixty continuous hours, using one D-cell battery. Unlike the military design, HelpBeacon operates with a simple, waterproof “on and off” switch. Also, a bayonet-type removable magnet has been added to the base for automotive applications.

In test markets around the country, the HelpBeacon has been used as a personal emergency locator for residents in hurricane, tornado, and flood-prone areas, as well as a visual aid for emergency personnel responding to ambulance or fire distress calls. Many are being used as roadside warnings to both alert oncoming traffic and attract roadside help. With the detachable magnet base, the unit is simply attached to the roof or bumper of any vehicle, or boat. Using the stainless steel clip, it is also used by backpackers, hunters, bicyclists, joggers, and students.

The company was surprised by the applications that customers found for the flashers. Skaggs said, “There is no question that these units can help save lives, the Marines proved that years ago… but what has been a surprise is the number of recreational uses people have found for HelpBeacons. Walkers carry them, kids going to school wear them on backpacks, rural home owners use them to direct arriving guests. We even had bike race organizers use them to mark stations along the race route.”

HelpBeacons are currently sold through selective retailers and direct to consumers at www.helpbeacon.com.
