European 2005 Golf Season Reaches Climax at Valderrama

(PRWEB) October 27, 2005 -- Colin Montgomerie heads in to the final week (27th October 2005), with his sights set firmly on re-capturing the coveted Order of Merit title at the Volvo Masters.
Montgomerie won the title for 7 consecutive seasons throughout the 1990’s, a feat which is unlikely ever to be repeated. Most sportsmen go through some dip in form, but for Montgomerie his whole life was turned upside down in 2002 following a well-publicised divorce.
But this season has seen the Scot go from strength to strength, and when he is in full flow there are few better golfers to watch. A revitalised Montgomerie arrives on the Costa del Sol seeking his eighth Order of Merit title - and his first since 1999 - after a wonderful season that has seen him win the Dunhill links championship, finish second to Tiger Woods in The Open Championship, both at St Andrews, and register ten other finishes inside the top ten.
His main challenger for the European Order of Merit title is Michael Campbell. The New Zealander missed the cut in his first five tournaments on The 2005 European Tour International Schedule before turning that form, and his world, upside down in dramatic fashion by holding off Woods to capture the US Open Championship at Pinehurst No.2 in June.
This catapulted the 36 year old New Zealander into the top echelons of the game as a Major winner and he rode that wave of confidence to finish tied fifth at The Open Championship, tied sixth at the US PGA Championship and winner of the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club, after defeating Ireland's Paul McGinley.
Campbell, chasing his first Order of Merit, trails Montgomerie by €153,486.70 going into the final event of the season.
Valderrama is the setting for this week’s finale and then many of the players will be appearing in the annual World Cup of Golf at the Vilamoura course in the Algarve – http://www.rightclub.co.uk/courses/portugal.asp.
England defends their title in the shape of Luke Donald and David Howell. Donald and Howell have both had great seasons and will be looking forward to playing in the Algarve, which is a popular venue for Golf Breaks (http://www.rightclub.co.uk/golf_breaks/default.asp).
The European Tour season always finishes on the Iberian Peninsula and both Spain and Portugal continue to become a fixture on the golf (http://www.rightclub.co.uk) calendar.
