The Sicilian hat has long been a symbol of the mafia, a stereotype that has been perpetuated in Hollywood by movies like the Godfather. Coppola Storta translates to tilted hat, it is a reference to the way the Cosa Nostra wore theirs, exposing their eyes. Fifty years ago almost all Sicilians wore a coppola, but it was the way the mafia members tilted theirs that distinguished them. Eventually “coppola storta” became slang for mafia members.
