Coolstandings Launches Pro-Basketball Simulation

A popular sports simulation website is now modeling professional basketball, projecting playoff scenarios by simulating millions of seasons every day.

Boston, Massachusetts (PRWEB) November 1, 2005 -- A sports simulation website known for modeling professional baseball and football - http://www.coolstandings.com - is expanding to project playoff chances for professional basketball. The 2005-2006 basketball season begins this week.

Every day, the remaining games of the season are simulated for all teams millions of times in order to determine the chance each team has of making the playoffs. Seeding probabilities are also determined for each team.

The coolstandings.com site enjoyed early success predicting playoff scenarios for the recently completed baseball season, projecting playoff appearances for Houston and Atlanta early in the season when both teams were struggling, and picking 5 out of the 7 playoff series winners.

The site also tracks the playoff probabilities for professional football.

Co-founders Greg Agami and Sean Walsh launched coolstandings.com this past summer, building upon principles from the field of sabermetrics to predict team performance using simple team statistics. Sabermetrics is the objective analysis of baseball using statistics, and was pioneered by Bill James in the 1970's. Daryl Morey and others extended some of these concepts to other sports such as football and basketball.

While such statistical analysis has traditionally been associated with baseball, many basketball teams are now also employing sabermetric experts as consultants. James is an advisor to the Boston Red Sox, while Morey is a Vice President for the Boston Celtics.

One reason statistical analysis is so successful with both baseball and basketball is the length of each season. Because there are so many games in a basketball season, the coolstandings.com simulation has enough samples to make reliable projections. And these projections help simplify all the playoff scenarios as the regular season progresses.

"With so many playoff teams and seeding possibilities, our basketball simulation helps determine where each team really stands," says Agami.
